Bond with your horse...sort of NH/Parelli question.

I have a bond with my horse and I have never done Parelli/NH or anything like it.

I can take his tack off after a ride outside the tackroom, hose him off, and then say come on and he will follow me to the stable with no headcollar or leadrope.

I call him in the field open the gate and he will walk through and wait, and then follow me up to the yard (no headcollar/rope) I can also turn him out like this.

I can ride him bareback with no bridle and he does whatever

Once he is in his stable I can leave the door open all night (did this by accident once, woops) and he will not move from his box.

He will lunge without a rope or whip and walk trot canter halt on demand

Etc etc etc

Now, I just think I have done good groundwork with him. I am not saying he is perfect however he does have good manners. I was wondering what all the NH/Parelli/dental floss brigade think of this/would call it?

It is not just Bruce I can do it with most horses depending on temprament..have done it with all of mine.
 
I would call it giving your horse clear and precise signals that he understands, that any horse will understand.

Unfortunately lots of people do not have this ability naturally and if techniques from Monty or Parelli give them the input on how to gain this ability then I see nothing wrong with it. The way I look at it, these methods are not really for the horses; but more for the owners to learn how to communicate with their horses.

Anyone who is natural with horses can have practically any horse in their pocket however what we find easy, some people find difficult.
 
i've got a bond with my horse... he comes galloping up from the bottom of the field when he sees me, won't do if for anyone else

... i think it's because i spend time grooming him, fussing over him in the field ect, and he loves it XD
 
I think that kind of ability is rare and you are lucky to have it- I dont as much as I would love to think that I have. I can bond well with my horses but it takes time for me to understand them and visa versa. I did find that PArelli helped me to think about how I was positioning myslef and how my horse positioned me without me noticing! Now I am more aware I think I have gained a stronger bond.
I truly wish i could walk up to any horse and be able to understand and comunicate with them as effectively as I would like- maybe its an experience thing?

Lance will follow me in without headcollar, leadrope etc, he will do the same going out. As will Beau.
While I do have a good bond with them I think them doing this is more about they have good maners instilled in them, and they know what they are supposed to be doing.

Beau is very protective of me however, and wont let any other horse near me in the field, he is also extremely affectionate and always tries to groom me.

I would bring any other horses in this way, because I wouldnt trust them that much, but if you cant trust your own horses then what can you trust I guess!

i have the same bond with joey, i think it is something few horse owners build up with their horse, i take so much time just being with joey, grooming or just tickling his ears. IMO parelli/monty etc is taking this bond to another level and developing it.
 
I have a great bond with all my horses, the best bond is with Flicks, who I have had the longest (6 years). I have no doubt that this bond is acheivable with just love and common sense -unfortunately not everybody has common sense - if they wish to pay someone to help them then what is the problem.

I was given a companion pony 3 years ago, I didnt have a clue where to start with her. Several pepole had tried to tame her and failed - inluding my riding instructor and some a touchy feely natural horse person. I got the Kelly Mark Perfect Manners book and worked my way through it, and it worked - was it the methods in the book, was it me, was it the way I keep my horses, had she just decided that she was going to tame her human - who knows.

I just feel that we shouldnt discount some of thes e methods - they are a tool that people can use should they wish - TBH I do find Parelli a little scary, a lady at work is heavily into it and every propblem anyone has ever had with their horse ever has can be solved by it! I do remind her from time to time that her horse was perfectly well behaved before she joined the savvy club!!!!!!!!
 
i think i have a bond with izzy she has always ran after me in the field and i have always played with her, i ride her out and gallop her in a head coller and lead rope no problems, i scratch her bum and she sits on my lap (the pain i go through for my horses

) i only realised people actually take time to train their horses to do these things when i went on a western riding holiday in scotland

She undoes the velco on my chaps and tries to pull my shoes off, she bites my toes if i am niggling at her when we are ridding, she will fight for the basket of chips at the pub and steal: knives, forks, salt shaker, vinegar and likes to like little girls hair.

You are all doing what comes naturally to you after many years of experience handling horses and ponies.

You are doing what Monty Roberts/Parelli are charging the earth for.

Nearly all of us have a certain 'way' about us, when we have been with horses for a few years. This is something to be very proud of and should be valued. There cannot be a price put on this ability - only years of experience, respect for our horses and the wonderful opportunity which we have, to put it to good use.

No amount of expensive lectures/clinics/teachings/demos will acquire that same bond which you share with your horses.

But maybe the real trick of having a natural talent is to be able to use it to help others, in this case horses and humans. Yes, a lot of it IS common sense but then one can hardly claim that's all there is to it and yet one is a "natural".

After all Mark Todd, Hubertus Schmidt, Nick Skelton etc. are just riding, right? How come it looks so different than what so many of the rest of us do? Same idea, different level.

I was once wailing about "Why can't computers be simple, like horses?" - much laughter from people who don't find horses simple.

Parelli in fast becoming a cult. But that doesn't necessarily mean it's all bad ideas - as Tia said, these "systems" are to teach people how to work with their horses, to provide "translation" as it were. I personally think one can do it without the trappings but who am I to blame someone who wants to spend their money so long as the end result is improvement? A lot of the Parelli stuff I've read is basically Pony Club - how to tie up, pick feet, mount properly etc. - in a glitzier package. The Games are actually quite a small part. Clearly there is a market for that education coupled with an accepting attitude. And yes, I do think it's a bit silly and overly commercialised but then maybe I'm just jealous I didn't think of it first.

I presume you are only half joking about going into business FF. You clearly are very able and would be a good addition to the educational fold. And if you could help horses and their people wouldn't that just make it all the better. Not to mention that every horse and person you work with would only increase your knowledge. Or at least that's been my experience.

The horse world clearly needs good teachers. All those threads about people coming to horses late, lacking an early education would certainly say explain the popularity of people who address that niche.
