Hi, I'm new to this, but have just bought a beautiful friesian gelding and as I know that they bond very closely with one person, I'm looking for some advice as to how i can help him bond with me. He was with his last owner for 6 years and i think he has found the move a bit unsettling and we have had a few issues so far with nappy behaviour and bucking which is very uncharacteristic of him according to his last owner. Does anyone have any tips for anything I could try to help him bond with me?

Thanks

Do some groundwork with him, take him out inhand for a graze etc. Some horses bond very quickly (like mine, he needs someone to be 'his'!), others take a while so bare with it. Good luck!

Thank you! he is starting to look for me now and neigh when he sees me so hopefully it wont be a long process, just he feels a bit disconnected from me when we ride out.

TBH, I'm not that into all this bonding stuff with horses. I don't think they work like that.

People at my yard think it's really "cute" that my horse calls out when he sees my car coming, it's not because he is pleased to see me, it's just because he wants his dinner/turning out!

I think when riding trust is important, but that's more down to being a kind, confident rider than having a bond.

Just my opinion. :)
