Had the farrier today as my boy has been intermittently lame for a few weeks now (no rhyme or reason to the spectrum of soundness from totally sound to crippled) but he has confirmed no abcess in the foot. He was very thorough and got me to walk, trot and turn him. He also had a good look in his foot and checked his digital pulse etc.

The farrier seemed to think it might be in his knee as there is a weensy bit of fluid on the front of the knee on his near fore (the lame leg) Although there is no heat and no visible swelling or injury. He also mentioned something about the possibility of a bone chip to the knee? Bentley is backed but unbroken and hasn't done any work, although he does hoon around in the field so *may* have injured it out there.

I am trying to get hold of the vets to arrange nerve blocks and x rays but I just wanted to know if anyone had any experience either (A) of similar symptoms or (B) of bone chips/knee injuries?

I have had a look online and realise this bone chips are a relatively common condition (expecially in racehorses) but that it can sometimes be hopelessly complex and ultimately fatal

Thanks for your help.

Hi

I can't help with bone chip on the Knee, but my boy has had a bone chip on the hock!!

He is an unbacked 4 year old and had to have an operation back in March to remove it. it was caused by OCD and is common in the big breeds. It only showed up once we started to back him. Unfortunately he is still lame (and £5000 later!). The vet is coming back next Friday to see what his future holds.

Sorry my story probably hasn't made you feel very positive. Hopefully its not as sinister as what my horse has gone through.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

It makes me feel slightly sick actually

I have everything crossed that it has been caused by an injury (a kick for example) rather than OCD as I've heard many stories about the complexities of treating the condition! All the very best luck getting your boy all better

Hi, my horse has just been diagnosed with a "joint mouse" in her fetlock joint after intermittent lameness. She would come in from the field with a swollen fetlock and lame but after a few days of bute and box rest would come sound again. After the last bout my vet xrayed her and the mouse was there to see, we had at first though she was suffering the equivalent of a human sprained ankle and was originally treating her for that. The "mouse" can either be a piece of chipped bone or floating cartlage and it moves around the joint, sometimes landing in a delicate part hence causing the lameness. A bit like a stone in your shoe I guess. Anyway, shes in for surgery which should be today so I will know more later. The prognosis from my vet was that the outlook was good but I will let you know how it goes.

Good luck and hope this helps.
