For anyone that saw my previous thread about my mare that had been diagnose with kissing spines, I wanted to give you an update on the bone scans she had yesterday. I have found previous threads on the forum really useful and many gave me hope and some really good advice. I want to do the same for others so will keep posting her progress through this.

I spoke to the vet and surgeon last night, who said that the bone scans didnt show up any nasty surprises, and that they show exactly what they had expected to find from the initial xrays that were taken. What a releif! Yesterday was a VERY long day!!

Normally they would take a more conservative route that involves the anaethestic and steriod injections, but because my mare has had such dangerous reactions to the pain she was in they feel surgery is the best option for her, which is what I was hoping for.

They will operate tomorrow afternoon to remove the middle 1 of 3 impinging dorsal spinal processes. I can go and visit her tomorrow after the surgery, and then if all goes to plan and there is no infection, she should be allowed to come home on Monday or Tuesday!

The RVC have been fantastic so far and have given me constant updates on how she is and what they have, and will be doing. They have also commented on what a well behaved girl she has been and that she was one of the easiest horses to bone scan because she has been so good! Very proud Mummy moment!

At the moment it looks like she will be on box rest for 2 weeks to allow healing, and then straight into rehab, which will consist of lots of long reining and pessoa work, although I am anxious about overdoing the lunging and pessoa work as I have seen from others that this can actually do more damage elsewhere. Anyway, I will discuss this with the vet when I go and visit tomorrow, Im just so releived that were moving forwards so quickly and she will (hopefully) no longer be in pain :)

So pleased for you. Get the results of the bone scan for my pony at 4.30 this afternoon, hope my news is as good as yours.

Fingers crossed for you - onwards and upwards from here & on the rehab front, don't get disheartened when you have a bad day and backward steps which you will, it's normal, just take a deep breath and carry on as if it never happened. If you are calm so will she be, I hope you get to enjoy her as much as I have enjoyed my boy, I have no regrets about giving him a chance and luckily it paid off. PM me is you get stuck with anything. Lucky horse to have you!!!
