My mare has been lame for 2 months and xrays and nerve blocks have not revealed anything low down, the vets think her pelvis/hip is the culprit since they saw something vague on the ultrasound. The vets have referred my mare for a bone scan at an equine hospital in Malton. My insurance (NFU) covers bone scans. How long will she have to stay at the hospital? I know it takes a few days for the radioactivity to degrade. Will NFU pay for her stabling at the hospital?

My horse had Gamma ray scintigraphy at Rossdales to eliminate Kissing spine. She went in Monday, was injected with the isotope. She was scanned later the same day, i was not allowed to see her until the wednesday. She stayed in until the Friday becasue the bone scan showed no kissing spin & her lameness transpired to be hind suspensory ligaments. So she had to have extra tests. I think i would otherwise have been able to bring her home after the 48 hours. Many insurers pay half the livery costs at the vet hospital. Hope this helps & good luck with the scan

Merlin was in for three days (until no longer radioactive).

NFU paid half the stabling/livery fee.

Ask if you can have a copy of the scans, I got a copy and they're quite interesting

My last boy had two scintigraphy scans- total cost for each scan was approx £1000, he was there for 6 days the first time because we had pregnant mares on the yard so was not allowed back utill fully unreadioactive, bat was only there for 4 days the second time round.
