Hi,

My horse has bone spavin in both back hocks and horsey friends have recommended devils claw for many reasons one being its a herbal remedy. Just wondering if anyone can advise/recommend any other joint supplements to help with the spavin?

Thanks.

I've been on the Equine America 1000mg Glucosamine with MSM.

MSM is of benefit to horses with spavin.

My horse has been on it for about seven years now - as with most supplements you end up being scared of stopping them, although you don't really know if they work or not! Tumeric is another one to try, apparently everyone is raving about it at the moment.

A friend swears by Devils Claw for keeping her 33 yr old gelding comfortable and well. He has arthritis and cushings and when she ran out of it, the old fella became noticeably worse.
My own gelding, however has Boswellia for bone spavins but I also ran out and stopped giving it to him. He has since, had an attack of laminitis and was again very stiff in his hocks. I've started the Boswellia again and he's much, much better. Maybe coincidental, but I have heard its good for lammi prone horses as well as those with spavins.

For long term treatment I would steer away from Devils Claw, as it is irritating to the stomach (just like bute is).

I gave my boy a mix of Glucosamine, MSM, boswellia, tumeric and ginger.
