My daughters pony was diagnosed with Bone Spavin (Aug 2011). He had steroid injections at the time that did not last long (and the outcome was also complicated by also having shockwave for PSD, but that is another issue).
Our pony is not doing well, with very stiff movement behind and is slightly unlevel ( problems dont look too bad in trot, but look awful in canter)
We want to do all we can to get him right, and my vet is discussing the possibility of surgical arthrodesis, and is taking a further set of X rays later in the month. However, our insurance runs out in July 2012 and this pony is 8 so we are hoping to move towards a permanent solution if possible, hence the discussion re hock fusion.
I wondered if anyone on the site had had their horses hocks fused via this method, and what the outcome was with regard to box rest, rehab and outcome.
(I have read the Shoemaker article on Ethanol fusing but our vet favours surgical arthrodesis)
