Bone spavin video

Really interesting thanks - I don't think you would notice much wrong with the horse on the left until you compare it to the horse on the right, and then it looks markedly worse.

Interesting, except my very spavined horse overtracks hugely in walk and tracks up un other paces.

I agree the lack of ease with which the hocks flex is the key feature and a real performance-affecting issue. Put mine in the sea in about 6" of water and he turns into a hackney behind- so they can still do it!

I was going to say the same brighteyes. Don't think the video helps having a tb type and a very fat pony to compare. Mine has bone spavins and when he's not sore you cant actually see a difference

Mine has bilateral hock spavins. According to x-rays they are fairly mild though he was pretty lame when diagnosed. He over tracks easily in walk, even slopping along, and when working properly he can manage a good 9in overtrack. He mostly tracks up in trot and has a nice big canter stride, especially considering his issues.

That video is quite interesting but I agree it isn't a fair comparison as the horses are so different. Would have been better to have shown two similar types of horse, one with spavins and one without, for a more even comparison.

The circle part of the vid is useful but with the right sort of exercises, you can improve this. My instructor gave me a flexion to do which helps my horse to cross over behind - it has made a massive difference to his stride length and general ability to flex his hocks.

ditto the other comments really- very useful, but a bit of an unfair match.
The rear view is interesting and is similar to my bone spavin horse, but i never really paid any attention as to how she moved when viewed directly behind her before her trouble. I have now thought that when i get a new horse I will video everything it does within the 1st wk to have something to compare to, as with any problem, especially if subtle, you don't notice the change in gait etc. I would love to know how my horse moved when i first had her (hopefully pre-bone spavin)!

what stage is the bone spavin pony at? recently diagnosed? fused? sound in trot?
