Hi,
Does anyone have a horse with a bone spavin? If so could you run through how you dealt with it and how the horse is now. Is he/she rideable, how long did it take etc.
Thanks in advance

My horse has spavin in his off hind hock at the moment. He has had the joint medicated and we are on week 4 of walking... he was off for quite a long time before having it medicated so we are doing everything slowly slowly. He is also on Newmarket joint supplement.

Vet coming out to reassess one night this week. I have no idea how long it will take before he is "normal" again.

my 12yr old gelding has bone spavin in both hocks. he was diagnoised 3 years ago. when first diagnoised he had both hocks medicated and 1 week box rest. since then we have put him on a joint supplement and is used for all riding club activities. he is a bit stiff when he first goesnof and it iis important that he gets daily turnout. he is riden 5 -6 days a week as if he is not in work he becomes very stiff and sore. he has went lame once in 3 years and i week of box rest and bute sorted it out. long may it continue for my lad

Horse had BS aged 11. He had 3 courses of steroid injections and regular gentle exercise without trotting on roads or hard surfaces. One hock self fused within 20 months and the other took another year.

Its better if they fuse themselves and it is important to keep them in regular gentle work and keep the weight off. Also do not turn the horse in small tight circles if you can, this puts extra strain on the inside hind leg which will be sore for him.

I stopped jumping my horse once I had the diagnosis, as a precaution. His welfare is too important.

Can i just ask pairciban... what do you think of newmarket joint supplment?? Have you noticed a difference?

Also, my bot has just recently been diagnosed with BS, he had his hocks medicated, also had tildren but after 6 weeks also having Cortaflex HA is still slightly short on his off hind... he has it in both!

Regualr work is alot better for him than being off... he has got very sore and stiff when he had 4 days off!! :-)

My boy was diagnosed with bone spavin in Sept 08. It was 80% self fused by then.
By late Feb 09 both hocks were fully fused.
I found that by keeping Fudge in regular, gentle exercise he was definitely far more supple than when he was doing nothing.
I gave him bute as and when necessary, got him re-shod every 5 weeks (so that his toes were kept short) and put him on a decent joint supplement.
He was also turned out as much as possible.
I also avoided riding any tight circles and gave up jumping while his hocks were fusing...I also found Fudge struggled going downhill on hacks, so I changed a lot of my routes because of this!
Good luck with your horse! x

Natalie12 I haven't got my boy on newmarket joint supp yet, but a few horses on my yard use it and the results are great, it's the only one that is proven (I think).

With my horse we are not certain that this is what he has, so we are going to x ray and nerve block to see if we can pin point the problem. Fingers crossed he hasn't got it but if he has then all of you have given me hope that he can carry on working.

Pairciban .... do the horses on your yard who use it have bone spavin??

My horse was nerve blocked and radiographed... showed up alot!

Has your horse had a flexion test... that would usually show it up too? :-)

Hi, the horses on my yard that use it have a variety of problems, not my horses so not sure what. One with back leg probs another with front leg probs so a mixture but all have shown improvement.

My horse is going in for x rays etc on monday
