Hi, I know of a 4yo warmblood that was diagnosed with bone Spavins in his left hock at the age of 3. The X-rays showed joint degeneration in right hind. The vet injected corticosteroid into the DIT & TMT joints. He also received an intravenous infusion of tildren to try stabilise the bone spavin.

Does anyone have any experience of this condition in youngsters (limitations etc). By all accounts the horse has fantastic confirmation and did very well at championships being awarded high marks for its confirmation.

Has anyone ever used pain relief injections for this condition?

Thanks.

Hi there, sorry I don't have experience of youngsters with the condition but my 12 year old has been diagnosed this year :-( investigations were started due to cold backed behaviour. He had steroid plus HA injections in May which made him more comfortable for a while but when we tried to increase work from just light hacking to include trot and a bit of schooling, his back went sore again. Having tried bute for a month he seems to have gone worse (without being ridden!) so is back to horspital next week for further investigations into his sacro and an alternative treatment for his hocks - not sure which yet.

I'm trying to keep optimistic that the affected joints will fuse and he'll be able to return to some form of work in the future. If you search in here and New Lounge you will see lots of threads about spavins - that's how I became a HHO addict :-)

Are you having his back xrayed? My horse was diagnosed with bone spavin and after injections to the hocks was no better. He became more and more cold backed. He was eventually diagnosed with very severe kissing spine. The two conditions often go hand in hand as one can cause the other. :(

Mine had both hocks injected and Tildren approx 3 weeks ago. Tbh I don't see any improvement at all. He is 9. He can be cold backed as well and I am thinking there may be other issues going on. I have taken his shoes off and turned him out for the winter.

Will see how he feels in the spring. Otherwise he is my new big orange lawn mower :)

Hi Wagtail, back xrays were the first thing done, in May, and were clear. The pelvic scan did show inflammatory changes but as the hocks appeared so bad it was decided to try and treat them first. Its awful when you don't know whats causing what but even though I still have doubts about his back the professionals are saying that there is no generic cause for pain in that area and it's all compensatory (is that a word?!?) due to hind end issues. He's at the point now that if he feels well enough to have a play in the field he jams his back up.

Sorry for the post hi-jack OP - for info my horse had conformation good enough to get him to RIHS but it looks like the arthritic changes have been going unnoticed (due to it being in both hocks) for a long time. If we can get him comfortable my vet reckons I should be able to get back to normal work with him, just not any fast work on hard ground/roads and not lots of small circles.
