My 8yr old came if from the field months ago with an egg shaped lump under his right eye. Got the vet out that said he'd had a knock and damaged the calcium bone covering, which has caused the bone to grow erratic ?
Anyway since this time the lump did go down and I thought it was disolving, but now its bigger than ever.
Surely if it was a bone it wouldn't grow then shrink and grow again.
Does anyone have any ideas what it could be ? Can bones get an infection ?
PS Had his teeth checked and its not a tooth etc .......... I'm puzzled

What feed does he get?

Depends if, when it was oging down, if it got knocked again, if it did that might make it grow again.
If not it might be a duct infection or something like that?
Does he mind you touching it? if you do, is it hard? or slightly squishy? Or hard but feels fluid filled? (if you get me)
If its definitely bone its prob just been knocked again, if not then thats why its altering shape

I think....

Hi It is definately solid to the touch like a bone, he hasn't really been bothered by it, but lately he doen't want me to go near it but when I do he doesn't seem to mind.
It just looks so awful, I am worrying myself silly about it and now that its grown I keep thinking the worse !

I would get the vet back to have another look, he will be able to assess/test if it is definetly bone or maybe something fluid filled but solid instead!
Don't panic, it will get sorted just need the vet to make a definitive diagnosis, which isn't always that easy! just make sure you keep an eye on it, maybe make a diary of its changes so that when you describe it to the vet you can be quite clear of what changes happened when! that will help them out!

I think what your vet is describing, with regards to him having had a knock, is periosteal reaction. The periosteum covers all bone and is responsible for producing more bone if more strength is necessary. If it has been damaged by trauma, it may produce more than is necessary- hence the lump.

With regards to the size change, bone is a dynamic structure and can be made and resorbed as the body deems necessary (eg. when a fracture first mends, a thickened callus forms around the fracture site, but over time this reduces)- so it's perfectly possible that the size change is just because of this.

If you're worried though, have a chat with your vet- I like to think I know a fair bit by now, but I'm still not quite qualified!
