One of my horses has a bony lump on the back of one of his forelegs at about pastern height. It is only small but can easily be felt under the hair. It doesn't seem to cause him any problems and he has had it for quite a while I just wondered if anybody could tell me what they think this could be? It almost feels like a splint but I didn't think they could get them on the backs of their legs?

How big is the lump? Are we talking a centimetre in diameter?

Could be a fly bite. Sometimes these get impacted and become really hard nodules, that might feel bony through the hair.

Alternatively if your pony has knocked itself or had an impact from a kick, for example, this may have healed to form scar tissue which can have a hard, bony consistency. My pony has hard bony lumps all over her front & back legs from old jumping injuries (before I got her, I hasten to add!!)

I would say you only need to be concerned is if there is any unsoundness on that leg that might be resulting from the lump...or if you get any weeping or frequent irritation from flies around the area.

It is definitely no bigger than 1 cm diameter. I wouldn't have thought it was a fly bite because it has been there for at least 2 years. He is not unsound and it doesn't seem to cause him any problems. It could possibly be an old injury from before I got him.

Thank you for your help. :)
