Hiya guys!
I just wondered if anyone could reccomend any books for breeding a first foal?

Obviously, will contact a stud & seek professional advice should the time ever come (hoping it'll be next year) but I want to really research properly.

Thanks
xx

From Foal to Full Grown, by Peter Rossdale is excellent!! For foaling, Foaling Simplified, by Sue Caldwell is awesome! For a more technical read, Equine Reproductive Physiology, Breeding and Stud Management, by Mina Davies-Morrell - it covers everything IN DEPTH!

I posted this list on another thread, for someone who wanted info for their first foaling - thought some of it might be relevant here, so, for your researching pleasure, here is a little list of useful DVDs, books and websites:

DVD - The Nature of Foaling (available from www.foaling.com) - a fantastic, informative DVD, and presents everything in a really easy to understand format.

Books -
The complete book of foaling (Karen Hayes), Your mares first foal (Jane Skepper), Complete foaling manual (Theresa Jones), Foal to full grown (Janet Lorch), Your First Foal (Karin Kattwinkel) - all available from www.amazon.co.uk

Websites - http://www.eqwest.co.uk/Factsheets/Factsheets/foaling.htm
http://www.stallionsdirect.com/mares/foaling.html
http://www.equine-reproduction.com/articles/predicting.htm
http://www.dclahdvm.com/articles/foaling.htm

Hope those help!

It gets confusing with so many "[start word] to [finish word]" titles. Perhaps the next one will be "From Fertilisation to Geriatric"?

PMSL!!! Thank you!!! Very true and with a title like that, it would have to be a top shelf best seller - LMAO!!

Thanks- plenty of 'light' reading there!

The indepth one sounds interesting!!

I'm shockingly excited and want to research EVERYTHING before I decide if I want to risk my mare or not. I'm terrified something will go wrong.

I have just been re-reading 'Horse Breeding and Stud Management' by Henry Wynmalen, first edition 1950! Way out of date on the technical side of course, but so much he says still makes a great deal of sense and stands good today.

I am having to re-stock my bookshelves as I have lost an entire crateful of books.

So, this is an interesting thread, thankyou.
