do you boot your horse when turning him out?

and what type of boots do you use - brushing, tendon, open fronted, closed fronted, equichaps/turnout socks?

I turn out my boy in over reachers, but on his hinds (looks pretty bizarre) because he is quite close behind and sometimes manges to tread on his legs the silly sausage. Occasionally he has brushing boots on his hinds as well.

Only boot my horse if she is going out with someone new. Otherwise she wears nothing, she doesn't brush and has never pulled a shoe off (touch wood), so don't see the need.

polo's on front with brush boot on top over reach and brushing boots on back, when muddy they have the full leanght boots that go from below knee ride to mid hoof with over reach on top

I hate seeing horses booted to go out unless its really really nec. I like to see a horse being a horse and having freedom of his body. Most horses dont need booting and know where their legs and feet are and tend to take care of them.None of mine are booted and so far.....!! M.

I love to turn my horse out with nothing on, but for coloured I dont really get that option. He has had bad mud fever before we got him and the boots have helped. Only wear o/r boots when I need to because IMO the sweating under them makes manky heel bulbs

Over reach boots alround and brushing boots alround, never without. I would not leave them on longer than about 5 hours though, it cant be good for them.

Only ones I know who are booted when out just have over-reach on

No, not every horse needs to be booted up, but it's a good idea if you're turning a new horse out into a herd or one that's been on box rest etc for a while

Ive got a 34 year old retired here and when he arrived his forelegs were in a dreadful state. Hed been turned out all day every day wearing noepro??? something boots. It had been a very hot summer and his legs had sweated and some dirt got in. End result was sweatburned legs. He still has sores that heal in the winter but have no hair at all and the summer is a nightmare as they open up and are basically raw flesh till October. Ive done/tried everything and all I can do now is keep them lightly covered and clean. I HATE BLOODY BOOTS (for no good reason)!!!

I've got neoprene hock boots. It's the stuff that they make wetsuits out of, so it DOES make horses sweat something terrible! I use them on PF when she's travelling, and understand why you would hate them!!
Personally, I don't and never have booted my hosses.

I boot up in the winter when they have less turnout time, andd they wear brushing boots all round... However i don't use boots in the summer as i worry about the heat caused by the neoprene affecting there legs, and also they tend to get more turnout time and don't run about as much.

Oh no I would never boot up in summer, I could never justify doing that on any of my horses.

Pickle has never worn boots in the field, he only ever wears boots for jumping, henry though wears over reach boots out in the winter as in the winter seems to manage to pull his shoes off

Ellie is never booted to be turned out. in winter, i let her feathers grow to give her some protection from the mud, and she isnt the sort to go tearing her legs in the field *hastily touches copious amounts of wood!!*

Overreach normally, but he was out with a new one saturday, was just trying to put brushing boots all round onto him when arch enery took off chasing him. he ended up jumping out the field via a 5ft metal gate and scraped a chunk off the inside of back leg. Dam, if only i was quicker getting them boots on!

My boy needs great big fireman trousers with padding in cos if theres something to stab himself on, he will!

My boy is never booted up for turn out although I am thinking about turning him out in equichaps in winter this year as I am hoping to keep him in work, and won't have much time to wash and dry his legs and (possibly) boot him up for work before it gets dark as I am at college all day so I am considering that option. But other than that he is never booted, neither is his girlfriend they don't need them...
