booted for hunting?

I am taking my tb mare out hunting for the 1st time in a few weeks. The only problem is shes very clumsy on her feet.

Our hunt has alot of road work involved and im worried about taking her out un-booted. Normally when we hack, we use knee boots and sports wraps. However, i am also concerned about mud getting into the boots and rubbing.

What would you personally do? Obviously i want her to be comfortable but i also dont want any injuries

we use the westrop boots with fleece inside and that stops mud etc getting in and rubbing. With it being her first time i really would use some form of boots just to be on the safe side. Have a great first day!!

I will only use Prolite's to hunt in, as they fit well to the leg, dont overheat, and my coloured horses legs were still white when I took them off, which means no muck got down them!! NEW do fleece lined ones which are meant to be good, but I worry abou overheating. Using nothing is better than using sports wraps IMHO.

please, whatever you do, don't use sport warps out hunting.... too much risk of rubbing.

If we ahve to use boots we use prolite boots, and westropp OR boots, and on wall days we use knee boots (i think they might be westropp too but not sure)

First time I went, I had to get off a totally wired horse to reaffix a sports wrap that had half undone! For this reason I didn't bother the subsequent times. My horse did a suspensory a few years ago so I am paranoid; but then I figured the risk of him aggravating that injury (which was a good few years ago) vs us going bum over tit at speed or over/into a fence was much less.

But then, we already had one nasty fall XC because of this - fluffed one fence and caught the boot, didn't realise, and fell foul of the next.

Don't people tape on boots for hunting?

I tape on my horses boots for hunting (and use ones I dont mind loosing if they do come off)

I use electrical tape (strong but easy to break off in an emergancy)

Last thing you want out hunting is to get off to put a boot back on.

I wont tape out hunting. If a horse jumps a fence, and catches a boot, I want the boot to come off, not for it to stay on and pull the horse over cos it is taped I just make sure I am using good boots that don't slip
