Hi.

Horse is going to a show this weekend.

He does not travel well and has been known to launch himself off the ramp so I am now debating leg protection for the journey.

I dont know what to go for, bandages or boots.
I was thinking I could bath the day before, chalk his legs, bandage overnight to keep legs clean and then leave the bandages on for travelling until we get there.
Would this work?

Also when I went to the shop there were a million types of bandage to choose from. What would do this job, elastic or fleece? Neither specified whether they were for stable or travelling?
They had some white fleece bandages but I wasnt sure whether they would be safe to travel in?
Also would I need to bandage his tail? Would I need a specific tail bandage for this?

Sorry for the silly questions, ive never done this before!

Personally I wouldn't want to do travel bandaging and leave overnight. If you want to keep his legs clean then apply stable bandages and then put travel boots over the top to travel the next morning. Fleece bandages will do the job but I cant abide the things myself, you are better off going for a knitted type stable bandage with a slight stretch in (so not elasticated ones either). You will need fibergee or similar underneath.
Yes bandage his tail as well, you need a tail bandage.
Last thing though...do you know how to bandage legs and tail correctly? Incorrectly applied bandages can do alot of damage. If not competent don't attempt without supervision you're better off taking the chance on the dirty legs and putting boots and a tail guard on to travel. :)

Thanks :)

Hi is a white grey and gets filthy so I was thinking of any ideas to stop his legs going horrible overnight as we are leaving for show at 7am!

Is it a bad idea to travel in bandages?
The only types tack shop had in are the fleece or completley elastic and I didnt know which to go for.

I will have supervision bandaging as I have never done it before!

I would prefer bandages to travel boots, as travel boots have a tendency to slip. Use fleecy ones, with leg wraps underneath, bandage as per stable bandages. Use knee boots and hock boots and if he rubs his tail or to protect plaits then either bandage or use a tail wrap.:) If you plait the tail the night before use an old stocking or tights to protect it.:)

No if you apply proper travel bandages they are IMO better than boots but if you want stable bandages on over night to keep him clean then you would have to take them off in the morning and re bandage with travel bandaging which sounds like hard work to me! I'm sure some people would and do travel in stable bandaging or bandage over night in travel bandaging but its not ideal or 'correct' to do so. I wouldn't do it personally. I have had this issue in a tack shop near me...I went somewhere else! I hate fleece bandages! Elastic bandages are for exercise, you don't want those.

I would go for travelling boots to be honest they are much easier to take on and off.

I'd bath him and rug him up the night before and leave his legs and simply wash his legs again in the morning if there are any stains on them - if hes not used to being bandaged up over night you don't want to stress him really

If you do decide to go for bandages you don't want elastic ones they are for exercising. Fleece ones are fine (I travel my arab in them) however you will need gamgee/fibrgee (foam wraps) underneath the bandages.

Tail bandages are slightly elasticated - they sould be simple to find as they are sold in 1's! and usually labled tail bandage

good luck and remember dont stress!!

Oh right thanks everyone for the advice!

I am now leaning towards boots and am lending a pair to try him with before I buy a pair, just to make sure he is okay.

I am tempted to just make a massive bed and leave his legs bare or lend a pair of fleece bandages rather than buy a pair!

i would wash legs night before and on the morning of party.
travel boots are fine- ive got rhinegold and weatherbetta ones and they have never slipped!
just make sure he is used to wearing them as they feel funny on their legs!

Thanks I will test him in them tonight and tomorrow to make sure. He is not a good traveller so I didnt want to stress him more with boots he isnt used too.

Unfortunatley we are being transported at 7am, so not much chance of a bath in the morning (although someone said baby wipes might do the trick?)
