Had my Petries for almost a year now, however the ankle part has started to sag even when they are on my foot. When the are not being used they would fall to the side ony i prop them up - would boot trees fix this problem? Bit disappointed seeing how much they cost and wanted to know if this is normal? I only wear them for riding in

Leather boots are designed to drop to a degree at the ankle? Especially if used alot.

A boot tree will help stop them from falling over, but won't reverse anything that's happened so far.

I can't recommend anything to fix whats already happened however I got a pair of long boots about a year and a half ago and they have never not had the trees in them (expect when riding obviously) and they haven't sagged even a bit at the ankle so if you are getting new ones keep the trees in them!!

If you haven't used a boot tree from day 1 then I'm afraid you are far too late now. Leather boots are designed to soften and contour to your legs. If you store them without a boot tree all they will do is contour to the ground. I'm actually slightly surprised they lasted a year. Most decent boots will drop and sag after a few months if you can't store them properly.

Yes get boot trees now to stop this getting any worse. But treat your next pair a bit more carefully!

Best thing I've found for my boots is empty coke bottles. They are wider than boot trees all the way to the bottom, and support boots far better in my opinion.

They are also significantly cheaper.

I was told not to store your boots standing up, as the weight from the calf shaft will cause the ankle creases to sag and crease further. I store mine lying down in their box.

Like the coke bottle idea - although a £2 boot tree from Lidl or Aldi isn't that much more expensive at least you get something else out of it and don't get so annoyed when one goes missing! Might try that next time my daughter looses one!

Joking aside - storing them lying down will still cause cracks to appear but at the front and back of the boot as they collapse flat. But you could stuff them with paper etc to support them. Storing upside down works - but isn't as practical in a horsebox. The moment you take the boot off stuff the tree (or drink bottle) in whilst the leather is still warm. If you've lost a tree and don't drink coke (other fizzy drinks are available) lying flat is better than standing up.

Am I missing something here? I thought all riding boots creased at the ankle - that's why we spend ages breaking them in, they are unwearable otherwise.

Any boot tree will be better than none and as already said, nothing will repair the damage to date. However, the best trees to buy would be the wooden vintage ones that include a foot. Very expensive to get made to measure ones nowadays but it is possible to pick them up in second hand shops for a pittance - the luck is getting a pair that are your size!
