i have a little problem with my v.clumsy horse..

my tb mare has a very narrow chest and is prone to brushing so she wears brushing or tendon boots all the time except in her stable. i used to put them with rubber overreach boots but they rubbed her legs round the top of the boots until they bled after about 20 mins!

now shes sort of brushing but is damaging her hoof wall just under the coronet band with her other foot. i guess overreach boots would help by protecting the sides of her foot but can anyone recommend some that are strong, but won't rub, for an extremely sensitive accident prone horse!

You can get sheepskin topped o/r boots.

Never heard of rubber ones rubbing before- they shouldnt be that tight tbh. You could try neoprene ones if the sheepskin topped ones are too expensive

the rubber ones weren't tight at all, i don't know how they managed to rub. it actually took me about 3 days to work out they were rubbing injuries not over reach injuries!

never seen sheepskin topped ones before.. where do you get them?

I have a hose who is seriously sensitive and rubs with everything. I have the eskadron fur lined over reach for riding in, and in the field I leave him with sausage boots on two diagonals. these protect him from the self inflicted injuries and prevent the boots rubbing

I was going to suggest a sausage boot. You may have to watch out for rubbing too though.
Iv used o/r boots on yearlings for prepping. Any shod yearling wore o/r boots and ALL wore brushing boots, during exercise.
Quite a few of the yearlings got rubbing injuries from the o/r boots - it was the sand and polytrack that caused the friction between the boot surface and the skin. Sand is quite a rough material if it gets inunder boots or sticks to the inside and maybe this is what is causing the problem?
try the sausage boots if you are looking for a relatively cheap solution, but the sheepskin o/r boots are a good idea if you dont ride on sand. (especially as in the UK and Irl its usually wet!)

Hi,
A solid overreach boot, ie a rubber or neoprene type will rub very quickly if it is too long over the hoof because when it touches the ground at the back of the heel it then moves up the horse's pastern causing it to rub, this cannot be avoided but if you use the Westrop overreach boots this does not happen because they are made up of small 'Petals' sections and as they hit the ground they seperate slightly at the front of the hoof which means the back of the hoof, shoe and pastern is still protected! you can buy individual petals to make the boots bigger for larger feet or take some off for smaller feet. They sell at around £18 per pair but well worth it. Hope this helps you.

Another one for trying a sausage boot.
Also ask farrier if the inner edge can be set under a fraction, or feathered, although with small tb type feet it may not be easy to do so.
