Have been advised by farrier that my mare would be better in the "old mac" "boa " type boot than with shoes. Anyone who has used them which are best ( any type) and where is the best place to get them from , are they any good anyway?

I would be interested in the answer for this to see if people who have used them prefer them to shoes.

I've seen them for sale in places like Robinsons.

Hello I love boa boots, fiddley at first but it takes me no time at all now I am used to them. I also have easyboot epics which are thought to be harder but again once you get used to them they are really easy. Boa boots are for roadwork and use epics for beach deep mud. Easycare website is really good and has a chart to help you deceide which boots will suit you best

The Saddlery Shop keeps lots of different makes and styles and you can hire them too.

There are three or four different makes available. They are a bit of a fiddle to fit to start with, like anything new, but when you get used to them they are fine. Good for road work, OK off road in the summer, not so good on wet grass/mud generally, although you can fit studs and there are different styles.

I bought some for my old horse but I can't remember the make. Turned him out once in them and he nearly broke his legs trying to run round but slipping all over the place. They were lethal on damp grass and the grip wasn't even great when I turned him out on the arena surface. I'd stick to shoes if you can.

I have Boa's, they're really good. I use the sometimes for turnout and gentle hacking on one of my barefoot horses. The grip is fine with them, in fact Id say better than shoes. They dont move yet dont rub. My pony loves his!

Old Macs are good. I used them on my Advanced Endurance mare and she went really well in them, I had no problem with slipping or anything. They do rub a bit though so I use the boa wraps with them and they are fine now. Mud can also be a bit of a disaster as they take so long to dry - I did put them in the washing machine but the noise was terrifying, won't be doong that again!
