Doing a small (only 2'6) x-country competition this weekend... want my horses legs to be safe and sound, seeing as he's so lanky it'd be just my luck he'll do something to them :P

Boots? (type?)
Bandages?

What'd be better? Course is only short, 1.5 miles, no water or anything drastic, I just want him to be comfortable and preferably come home with 4 legs still attached... also, can't really afford to spend a small fortune on boots! Do plan on doing more X-country eventually, but this is really just a 'trial run' so to speak... heheh.

For your event your horse will be absolutely fine in a normal set of brushing boots. Just make sure they have good velcro and are not likely to slip down. To be doubly sure you could put some tape (electric tape) around the straps. You could pop a pair of over-reach boots on too if you wish.

No need for anything fancy, just some well fitting neoprene type boots. Avoid bandages as much as possible they are just too hard to put on really correctly & are very dangerous if they move.

Have fun

Thanks! Will see what I can find!
Can't believe the price of boots though these days... eesh, but I guess we all know horses aren't that cheap!

Yeah, do have my worries about bandages, heh

And I'm sure we have some elecric tape somewhere... just a matter of finding it! haha

don't bandage for xc unless you are really hot at bandaging and going to stitch the tapes.

bog standard brushing boots will be fine for that height, with some overreach boots if you want as well

Id say his usual brushing boots would be best. Id never use bandages for XC, too risky them coming undone and TBH I dont think they offer much protection anyway - there's nothing solid about them, they're only good for supporting the leg (ie. for dressage etc.).

I bought some NEW (New Equine wear) boots, they are FAB! bit more pricey than your average brushing boots but well worth it. There's usually some knocking around on e-bay.
