Hi, I have been growing out my cob's feathers for a few months now and have been using pig oil and sulphur to keep them in good condition. I am getting him clipped next week and am reluctant to have his feathers clipped off but equally am concerned as we are approaching Winter and the field does get muddy. He will be stabled at night and out during the day. Should I just carry on with the pig oil and sulpur or would anyone recommened those boots which aim to prevent mud fever (for example the EquiChaps Close Contact Chaps)? Has anyone had experience of these? If they are good does anyone use a brand that make them big enough to fit a heavy 16h cob? I've yet to find any boots to fit him!

I have hairy horses and as long as you keep with the P&S and don't wash the legs out, you are unlikely to get MF. Touch wood on the four I have had with full feather and P&S there has never been even a tiny scab from MF on them.

I would not use chaps on a hairy horse - more likely to have the legs overheat with the hair and the long feather and oil create a very good barrier - part the top hair and the skin and under hair should be dry and white.

If you want a very very long PM on hairy horses and keeping their legs is show condition and good health, send me a PM and I will send it you by return.

I wouldn't use the turnout boots. We have them for a mare with arthritis to keep her warm. The mud gets underneath around the coronet band and sits there damp all day.

TBM - take care with luxurious feathers and mud. There's a condition called bog burn that hairy neds can get in very muddy fields. The mud acts as a pot scourer/chemical peel and the feathers just "burn" away.

Thanks I will leave them as they are and see how we go. I will keep an eye out for Bog Burn- have just looked it up on the net so I know what to look out for. hopefully the Pig oil and sulphur will prevent this.

Theresa F- I have I have your PM (on an old account that got deleted due to an email hacker!) and its my hairy horse Bible thank you! Seems to have worked really well since I have used it.

I am pleased it helps - just remember your life will now be one of constant worshipping of the hair - keep with the P&S in wet times and sulphur in dry times and you should have lovely pest free and great condition hair.

I am owned by a hairy legged equine and as Theresa says, you will be constantly worshipping the hair now.

Keep with the P&S. Helps reduce bog burn and MF.

Have tried the turnout boots and the mud gets underneath and stays wet.

okay thanks, i'll keep on with the P + S and hopefully the will stay fairly clean underneath. I dont need them to look glam I just want to ensure his legs are as healthy as poss. Thanks everyone think I have saved some money here as dont think these boots are going to be right for B.
