So following being on the mend last week he went rapidly downhill and was readmitted on Friday. They were afraid that despite all the antibiotics the infection may have gone systemic. He was also still being very picky and wouldn't drink. They did bloods straight away whch thankfully came back "boring" as the vet put it so nothing had spread to his organs or gone systemic. They then decided to make an incision beside the bite sight and see could find any foreign bodies (nothing on the xrays but you never know?!) and relieve some of the pressure from the swelling in his foot. There was no foreign body but the foot did start draining and over 12 hours as the swelling reduced the skin started to ooze a little so vet reckons there was a cellulitis response building which was on the verge of breaking out much higherup the leg which would have been very messy so thankfully surgically relieving the pressure has prevented that. There was the fear that he had picked up a strain of Leptovirus and definitive results re: that will be back today but the fact that whatever infection he does have hasn't gone systemic is very good. He was kept in on IV anti-bs and a drip to hydrate him and then was let home on Sat nite. I unfortunately HAD to go home(3hours away) for sat night so a good friend of mine kindly picked him up and nursed him over night and i picked him up yesterday. He is sooooooooooo much better. Due to the bandage on his foot he is now putting no weight on it which will prob help it heal quicker as he was putting weight on it last week and as a result it was swelling even more. He goes back in today for a dressing change but is definitely on the mend properly this time. He is being picky about food still coz he knows the antibs are in it but he did help himself to a candycane of the Christmas tree last night so is starting to get back to his mischievous self! I also want to get my hands on a horsy version of the vets vetwrap...the one she put on Boots has blue pawprints on it and for bitches they have pink pawprints! I reckon any horse would feel better quicker if they had hoofprint vetwrap lol!
