I'm guessing someone out for a picnic, or going on a hike, suddenly felt the call of nature, and with no toilets nearby, went behind a bush/rock/tree/whatever vegetation available.
One of my late Buhunds rolled herself in human poo once. There's a trail going up in the woods, which just before reaching another trail passes by a simple lookout spot where people easily can light a fire to grill something. We were just walking past to reach the other trail, but apparently one of the previous visitors to the lookout spot had left their visiting card behind some nearby vegetation.

My dog was playing with one of her friends when they disappeared behind some bushes and didn't immediately reappear. Uh-oh, what are they doing? They were eating poop, the human variety.

That tops the fox poo my bc regularly rolls in!
BTW, maybe a useful tip, or maybe not. But I found castile soap mixed with a small amount of biological washing liquid works like a dream for removing any kind of sh*te related stench. Obviously don't leave it on for long, but a quick lather followed by a thorough rinse is enough to kill the stink while not harming the skin.

My spaniel found some of that and ate it......my dad and mum were with her as i was at work and had to wash her mouth out and give her multiple baths

My Airedale rolled in some of ‘that’ out on a walk, we had travelled there by bus so l had to walk her home about 4 miles as far away from me as possible.

This happened to one of mine once on the beach. Husband repeatedly threw her in the sea until she was clean. It was the only way, she was even more covered than that one.

It remains one of my most hideous memories.
