Borderline Cushings test results??

So I had my veteran tested for cushings - only symptom was a thick coat, it came back 'borderline' according to the vet, so they would like to re-test in 6 months, apparently there are false results around this time of year???

Another veteran with coat & also laminitis issues on the yard was also tested - his came back negative & the vet said he isnt coating out well cause of his age!

So my question is this - with no other symptoms in my horse, would you do anything?? I was thinking of adding a herbal supplement for the summer, like Agnus Catus or Chasteberry (apparently the same thing or similar??!) are the two I've read about so far. Any others??
 
PLease check ou The Laminitis Site, as it will give you all the info you need regarding PPID and EMS/IR. My horse was 'borderline' last year, excess sweating after exercise, not shedding coat and LGL...he was put on Prascend and retested 3 months later, improvement was brilliant...Agnus Castus doesnt actually do much or Chasteberry I'm afraid, the only thing that does actually help your horse is Prascend..

But my horse has no symptoms??! How can it HELP him if he isnt suffering from anything??

Only thing was a thick coat... but there is another veteran on the yard that has a thick coat AND laminitis who tested negative so it isnt always cushings!
 
Its like being on the verge of getting diabetes - you can still do positive things to bring down your levels to make you healthier & not get it. He is borderline, so I would rather try & do something to reduce the possibility of him getting it full blown!
 
My horse had loads of negative tests but kept getting laminitis. Eventually she was diagnosed with Cushings. The blood tests can be hit and miss.
 
If you look at all the symptoms listed for PPID, you do have one symptom , a long coat, and you may have others that you didnt know about. Up to you obviously...Just because the site says Laminitis, doesnt mean its all about laminitis, it lists PPID/EMS/IR symptoms too.
 
Even without a high count on the blood test it can sometimes be worthwhile to trial Prascend for a couple of months. Sometimes even without the high count there are effects of Cushings going on which may have just been put down to aging but when treated will make you realise that there was actually a treatable problem there.

Ok, good point - very well put :)

I'll have a chat to my vet again & see - they were reluctant to give him anything based on the results so I'll have a chat & see what they say!
 
My cob also had a borderline test, then tested just under the cut-off 6 months later, no symptoms apart from lethargy, so did a prascend trial for 3 months. Made no difference to the lethargy, if anything, perhaps even slightly worse, so stopped the drugs and horse spontaneously recovered over the next few months.
