Looking for a coach for my teenage girls. They are 14, experienced riders and very serious about horses. Just moved to West Linton after living in Canada and the US. We don't have horses yet, but are looking to get two. We home educate, so plenty of flexibility in scheduling. I know there are lists of coaches on the BHS, etc. but we're new to Scotland and really don't know anyone. We have tried a lesson barn or two but my girls are tired of the drama that seems to gather there and the rushed, inattentive lessons. Looking for someone with patience who is kind, and encouraging.

I'm not sure who to recommend as I'm the other side of Scotland but I think you will perhaps be looking for a different type of trainer once you get your own horses/ponies as riding schools here usually tend to cater for the weekly or fortnightly hobby rider as opposed to the more serious riders. If I remember your previous posts your girls were interested in show jumping so Andrew Hamilton at Carluke, Sandra Low Mitchell in Leven or the Lohoars at St Andrews would all be worth approaching to source jumpers. Alternatively approach your local Pony Club to ask for recommendations for where to go for lessons.

I know John Hill is fairly close to you I think, flat,sj/xc, he has a facebook page be worth dropping him a message as I'm sure if he can't help he'll know someone. I've used him previously with good results and like him (not that I have many lessons these days, and thats not cos I'm any good lol)

Also be worth getting n touch with the borders riding club as they are fairly active too

Thank you. I will look into these. Kind of you to remember my daughters'. They do take their horses seriously and hope to have careers doing something with horses.

West Linton is quite near Edinburgh so probably better to go that way than down to the Borders, but the ISEC near Selkirk might be worth a call they have lots going on and it’s a nice centre with a reasonable cafe!
