Boring Post Alert! How do you store chaff?

I currently split a bag of Alfa-A oil into 2 x 65l feed bins and use a third for cubes.

However our ever so slightly militant YO has decreed that we are only allowed 2 feed bins each from now on as she is packing in lots of new liveries.
So I need to find something bigger that I can put a whole bag of chaff into!
We won't be allowed mini wheelie bins or metal chests etc either

Do you think this would do the trick?

Am googling to see if I can find a 120/130l bin but no joy yet...

Warned you it was boring

I use normal waste bins too...have three of them for one pony...but did have more than that for both of mine...what if you have more than one horse and it has different feeds what do she expect you to do?

I am not sure what the people with 2 horses are doing actually - must ask tonight.

She's a great YO but I think she needs to realise that taking on lots of new liveries means she may actually have to use more fields and storage space

We are also not allowed to store our rugs on the rug racks anymore... the mind boggles.

In general though it is the best yard in my local area and everyone is very nice so I will just have to get on with it lol

I have just found 120 litre bin but its POA so probably extortionate!

blimey she nuts? not allowed to use rugs racks now?? I dont get her reasoning behind any of what she's doing apart from wanting to make more space for new ppl but she has to look after you all aswell....glad that you like it there though thats always good to hear about a yard...the bin looks quite large so might be great for your storage probs...i would prob say it'll be about £10-15, although if you were to look at hardware kind of shops you may find something similar cheaper?

If you squash it down loads you can fit it into one bin. I buy Alfa A as well and instead of pouring it (which makes it fluff up) I take big handfuls of the still compacted stuff and put it into the bin. I get a feed bucket, and every 4 or 5 handfuls I put it on top of the Alfa -A, stand in it and jump around a bit - you might need to move the bucket around each layer to get an even squeeze on it! You look like a nutter

and it can take a while but it does work -I normally end up with about 4 big double handfuls left which I just leave in the bag on top of the bin and it's gone in about 3 days. I have a metal dust bin which is slightly smaller than the black plastic ones people usually have so you should get it all in if you have one of those.

LOL thanks annagain - I will try your technique! I don't mind looking like a nutter - I think a black bin will do the trick

I just know that if I use one bin and don't get it all in I will have half a bag lying there for ages and will get into trouble over that

cheers kezz - it is quite funny but a tiny bit annoying also but in the grand scale of thing its not that important.
I forgot to say we are allowed to use them when the rugs are wet - just not to keep dry rugs on lol x

I put as much as I can in one bin then keep the rest in the bag, in my other bin I have a bag of mix and a bag of nuts, but if I didn't have two bags of feed in the other one then the bag of Alfa would fit in there. As it is I just keep the rest of the bag on top of my bins, it only takes a couple of days to get rid of it and we don't have a rodent problem, if we did I'd keep it in the house until I needed it (we only live a few yards away from the stables!)

I do have to squash it in though.

I normally find that if I squash my bag to make it O-shaped before I attempt to put it in, then sliding it in sideways and squashing it untill it fits usually does the trick, the lid might not fit for a couple of days though, usually okay in my normal sized plastic bin

That 110ltr bin looks like a bargain though..!

I only have two but my horse only eats two types of feed. There are people on my yard whose horses have a variety so will have a bin for each type and they often have more than one horse! Surely she has to find space to accomodate ALL liveries feed?!

I have to try that - I'm pouring it in and I normally have a fair bit left in the plastic bag which I then keep on top of the bin.

Is she mad, she may be making more room for others but she may well lose the liveries she has with daft rules like this. Why can't you have a metal bin as long as the space used is the same ? I have an old med size chest freezer which I got from the local tip - it is not large & takes up about the same floor space as two round dustbins but because of the square shape I can fit a bag of alfa a, bag of nuts, bag of carrots, supplements and store my buckets with feeds made up ready. There are also totally rat proof which plastic dustbins aren't. Where are you supposed to keep your rugs !!! I expect if it's the best place around that you do want to stay, but if somewhere new opens up she could find herself high & dry & with a poor reputation as well.

We used to have this problem at an old yard, only allowed 2 bins, no buckets or carrots etc to be left out, everything had to fit in your bins. I used to fill one bin with chaff then tape the bag up and take it home until my bin needed filling again.

I don't think there is a rodent problem but then surely the bag is going to look just as messy as the bin... if I CBA getting a new bin I will just do that.

BF would go mad if I kept it at the flat haha

I am SO glad you agree - I wondered if I was being silly to think it was a daft rule

Definitely - the people are so lovely that I would never cut my nose off to spite my face and in general it is a brilliant, friendly yard but if somewhere with the same level of facilities but more grazing opened I bet loads of people would move.

I bought very cheeply from the hardwear store a large garden water butt and used carpit tape to plug up the tale hole. No hole in the lid for the down pipe takes a full bag Chaff
