Borrowing Transport

I know you are not allowed to give lifts for payment, but how do you stand if you are insured for any driver to just lend your lorry out?

(just a nosey question really, as someone I know lends hers out - but it came back dented last time

i don't know where you'd stand if something happened (eg the horse injured it'self ) and they wanted to claim damages as neither you or the horse would be covered by insurance. or alternatively if the horse wrecked the box i doubt you could claim off of them.

I have 2 lorries- 1HGV , 1 non-HGV
Both are insured for anyone over the age of 25 ( with approporiate driving license) to drive them. I used to be very free with letting friends /. associates borrow them. However one person reversed the HGV into a wall, and then returned it to my yard, parked it up and didnt mention it..... ( £800 bill), and denied all knowlege. The Non HGV was bought as new, custom built- and now has teeth marks on the interior and exterior from someones horse chewing / scraping, and some hefty dents to the partitions.
I would NEVER let anyone else borrow either of them again now. I will happily collect friends en route if we are going to the same place, but that is it. I also have no idea where you would stand if a horse was injured on a lorry you lent.
More hassle than its worth. However I keep up the insurance for anyone policy in case I had an accident at an event and someone needed to drive my lorry / one of the horses got ill and needed to be taken to horsepital immediately and I wasnt around.

You need to get special self drive insurance Norwich Union do it but it is very expensive

You will also need to get the lorries approved by DEFRA (or rather one of the 3 certification companies that do it)

You will also need commercial Roadside recovery

You will also need to do a comprehensive contract for the hirer including how much excess do they pay if they have an accident etc
