grr so annoyed with myself-went to straightgate today and he flew around the timed section, and it was all going well until the trakhener!elimination!i just couldnt get him over it, although now ive thought about it i rode APPALINGLY!Then i found out if i had gone clear i would have won, because i got the fastest time in time section!Any tips for riding trakheners?!

Well done for the timed section!!

I've been told to sit up and kick, look up and don't look at the ditch - which is easier said than done! I will be interested to see the replies though as I've been having problems with trakehners too!

agree with the look up comments! I wanted to jump the little trakenher as Fleur likes ditches but couldn't as was in the 2ft6 so it wasn't in the course (not that that would have stopped me

) and there were people in the way which well did ha ha.

With ditches though the worst thing is to look down into them, if you do you will very rarely get over them! If you look up sit up and ride forward then you can keep the horse's concentration and prevent them from looking down.

And ok you win you did slightly worse than me in that I actually managed to get round the course LOL. Did you continue though or were you asked to leave the course?

Would have said hi If a) i knew what you looked like and b) hadn't run off home fairly quickly after washing her off (end class 3) as it was starting to rain

Oh just remembered I have also been told to keep your hands up to keep the horse's head up so they don't look down at the ditch, don't do what I do and drop your contact a few strides out! It's easy to sit here and say what to do but so hard to remember it all and do it right when you're approaching a ditch and sh*tting yourself!!

yeah i went round the rest of the course clear!i was only there for class 6 so wouldnt have seen you, did you get anywhere?helenandshadow-will take it on board!yeh my legs seem to freeze and i dont kick!

to be honest not a clue as didn't wait for even the results of class 2 never mind class 3. if a miracle occurs that I wasn't eliminated for jumping the wrong fence and as didn't step back at bank got awarded a clear for the second round would thought they would send things in post but very very doubtful and will not be waiting for the postman to bring me anything

The advice of sit up, look up, keep the horse on the bridle and kick will work to some extent. I would, however, add that if this is the only way of getting the horse over it may be worth taking a step back & spending a lot of time.
By doing the above you may get away with it because you are forcing the horse not to look and see what is going on. As the ditches get bigger the horse will eventually see them !
Lucinda Green always starts horses by getting them to walk over an open ditch - it is important to walk and not let them race off afterwards. The idea is that they see the ditch and learn that there is nothing to be scared of. Note that this may take some time if the horse is scared of ditches. You may need a lead from an experienced horse. Once they are happy jumping a ditch from walk do the same with a trakhener - yes that does mean walk to it and let the horse jump. Once they are happy jumping it from walk jumping from canter is a doddle.

ummm only prob is he will do ditches fine!He doesnt care about ditches at all-he happily trots over the big ones! Its odd because ive never had any problems with trakheners before-i dont know if it was just this one he didnt like-it was on a downhill and was a bit of and odd jump really. Do you think its just a matter practise?thanks for advice everyone so far!

it was a very odd trakenher thats for sure as it wasn't just downhill it was basically at the bottom of a V with an upward slope straight after and it wasn't a plain hanging log as such either. If he is normally fine it may well have been just that fence! the ground wasn't great by the looks on either side due to the stream (didn't walk big one so not sure!).
