Bowed tendon

Hello everyone, my horse recently created a hole in her tendon (got caught on a fence in her field) she had stem cells taken out her marrow bone 4 days ago and is having them injected in 3 weeks or so, I'm aware the recovery is 9-12 months which I don't have a problem with but I was wondering if anyone knows if she will be able to go back to her usual jumping standards, she stands at 147cm and has jumped 145cm, she was jumping 1m20 courses at home and 1mish out, the plan was (before she was injured) to get her into the 1m10s/ 1* and possibly the 1m20s but I would have to push her... Is this possible or do I need to be extremely careful?

In theory there is no reason why she should not return to doing what she was doing in plenty of time. In practice it entirely depends on how well the tendon heals and how much of it fills with tendon fibre and how much scar tissue.

In the long run you will need to take much longer to build up to those heights again and forever more be careful on what surfaces you jump on.

At least you have given yourself a fighting chance with the stem cells and I do hope they work for you though I myself am on the fence about them.

It varies on many things
age of horse how bad it is
how quickly it heals etc.

1). a livery who was 17 did major hole in tendon. He was box rested 3 months and then brought back in slowly and went on to do most what he did minus the hunting.


2) My mare bowed her tendon on the gallops and was box rested and it stayed bowed and she could not get up for 3 days but did and then retired.


3) 2015 March my livery mare got a hole in her tendon behind the knee, livery would not box rest so taken longer, she bandaged it at night and massaged it with one of theses http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hand-Held...626933?hash=item25b497a4b5:g:eCcAAOSwYGFUrZmR twice a day since march and bless her heart even though on part livery she has mucked her out every morning since then. She turned her out in our round pen during the day. Now 2016 told 1 more month in round pen and start leading her in hand then get on her. Tonight she got on her for 5 minutes for the second time. She wont come back into full training for dressage only hacking. The mare is 26.

So every horse heals differently, I know your is not bowed and quite frankly I would not feel happy jumping my mare if it is torn unless the vet gives it 100% all clear as if made to do it and the tendon not up for it. You may live to regret it if it goes completely and have to make that call.


I would get some http://globalherbs.co.uk/products/tendoneaze/and follow instructions from vet. My boy has had to retire due to tendon issues 2 1/2 years I used this on him as did my livery. It is nearly a year since this mare got a hole in her tendon.

So I would do what you can to aid it and support it while it heals for the best outcome.
