Just wanted to get some idea of the length of time people had their horses on box rest after having a tie back and laser hobday.

I have been told 5weeks box rest, then turnout with gentle exercise for 2months and then get her scoped before going back into full work however when I commented on another thread someone suggested my vet was being VERY cautious.

I obviously will do what my vet thinks best - however my mare really hates being in the stable - and I would like to have a chat with him about it if lots of other people have had their horses on shorter box rest after the same op.

Thanks in advance.

That was me! I had Cedric Chan do my horse and he is an Olympic vet. He told me 14 days box rest but agreed that my 90ftx38ft barn would be fine as long as he did not gallop around in it. Then two weeks in a restricted area, but of course I left him in the barn as it was the right size. Then two weeks grazing in a small area, too small to do more than trot a few strides, then into progressive work just as if he was only an unfit horse with no injuries. He had the op on September 17th and he hunted before the end of October. He eats dry hay from a net and has never blown back food down his nose, coughed on exercise or choked when eating.

My friend's horse has just been done and she has had the same advice though hers had on open-throat hobday and mine had a laser one. And both tied back at the same time.

Hope that detail helps.

We were told 8-10 weeks off - 4 weeks box rest, couple of weeks very restricted turnout, couple of weeks normal turnout if he was sensible (or restricted if he was likely to charge about ) then get back on and start walking as though getting a horse back into fitness

Not to be allowed to get stressed, charge about or put in a position where he would neigh

To be scoped before we started any fast work

Op done end of season - April - back in work June - walked for 6 weeks, then started trotting. Hunted that season brilliantly (couldn't hear him coming from 3 fields away!!)

This wasn't laser though
