Hi
Need some suggestions - my rising 3yo has just had colic surgery 10 days ago...and can now eat etc as normal. Trouble is, she has to be box rested for an eternity (at least 6 wks) and is behaving like a demented dervish. Anyone had experience of post op colic and when can I turn it back out???

Please check my posts about my horse on box rest.He was going mad and destroying his stable we followed everyones advise but the best advise was to use a stable mirror now you wpuld think he is drugged ,it is a miracle.I bought it on ebay and it arrived the next day and now peace for us and him

Thanks 'Carthorse'
I've tried to find a sheltie to keep her company, but failed so have taken your advice to try a stable mirror. I'm a bit cautious as my friend tells me the studies showing a reduction in stereotypies were only conducted over 1 week...so the calming effect might wear off....has yours been effective for longer than the week?

PS your username's appropriate - my patient is half Shire!

Well ,it has only just been a week but he is still very placid and his leg[it was a very deep wound] is really mending. He is as quiet today as he was the first day I put it in but my other horse hated it and after one night we took his out, but he is very agressive anyway and scared of everything.Other people on the forum said their horses still love them after having them for a while .We are optimistic that he will compete at the dressage champs as BD say he can wear a black vetwrap if the vet says he needs it to protect his leg but he will have to stay on box rest a few more days then start work and see how it goes.
I had a horse have colic surgery many years ago and he got over it and never had another problem[he was 4 and they thought it was from worm damage as a foal]

Hi again Carthorse
Thanks for the info. And very encouraging about your horse after colic surgery - my girl had a bit of a worm problem when I bought her so that could be it....needless to say I've had my herd worm egg counted at zero....so a bit less guilt there!
Hope your boy does well for you....
