Only on day 3 of 6 weeks of box resting horse, the first 2 weeks involve walking in hand for 15 mins twice daily. Horse is on low energy maintenance rations only but he is already a handful which is not been helped by the wind and rain, just wondered if anyone has any tips to keep him sane?

I expect that once he's established in his routine he'll settle down to it better.

Do make sure you wear a hat, gloves and he a bridle.

I'm just on my last week of 6 weeks in-hand walking and i've found it's best to vary where I walk him i.e. morning school ,afternoon drive and yard loop as when he gets bored he bites me and has a whoopee moment!

Also, if I make sure he has a full belly (i.e. walk just after feeding and hay) and let him have a roll in the school first, he is much more settled.

I now have 6 weeks walking under saddle - not looking forward to it as he does like a buckaroo, even on the road

when mine was on 9 weeks box rest when he was ready to be walked out due to how he is the vet advised to ride him , so went with 2 good buddies on sensible horses and grinned and bore it, it was entertaining but all good in the end. Speak to your vet to see if you can ride as you will have more control than on the ground :)

My horse was on 16 wks box rest and I was supposed to walk out twice daily building up to an hour. No chance, I tried sedalin but he was that hyped before I gave it him, it didnt work. I ended up walking up and down the stable block for about 20 mins, with a chifney and hard hat as it was the only way I could keep him contained and on 4 feet. I tried the school but he went ballistic and it took 2 of us hanging on to him to try to stop him leaping about.
Funny thing was when it came to riding him which I was dreading, he was brilliant and sane

I lead one of mine from another horse - he was much more settled that way. I did this after talking to my vet as he was dangerous for me to lead out in hand.

Im on week 7 of box rest - two weeks to go!!! I have tried sedalin - to no avail. Trying bromide which appears to keep her chilled but still dosnt stop her having mad moments.

Im finding keeping to a routine is better for her and keeping her away from loose horses out in the field! She is confined to walking around the yard with a long lunge line and riding hat in the mornings. And evenings she has ridden exercise in arena. She has had two woopsie moments involving sitting on concrete and double barrelling the fence (legs came off worse than fence!!)

Cant wait for this box rest to be over to be honest! Although then ill worry about her going mad in the field!!!
