Keep trying to get out for my first hunt but life is conspiring against me, was out the country in November, got back and got horse fit and the car broke down on the way there, then the trailer isn't right and the person who services it is struggling to fit it in. Looks like my chance to get out may be over Christmas - I know its not ideal but is it a ridculous idea for my first time? Horse has hunted a lot in the past but not for a few years.

If you do then aim for a meet that isn't boxing day or new years day. If you check your local packs you are bound to find one has a meet between Christmas and new year.

As a first time out I would totally avoid both meets as they tend to be very busy with riders/horses who don't know what they are doing or are not in full control.

I have hunted all my life andi would rather go to the dentist ( I hate the dentist ) than hunt on boxing day or new years day.

Yes, ridiculous idea IMO.

They are very busy meets with lots of mounted followers.

I've been hunting for years and I haven't done either meet for a couple of years because I got sick of the amount of riders who don't usually hunt being dangerous, cutting people up into fences, having kickers in the middle of the field, bringing dangerous horses out.

I also got kicked in the leg on Boxing Day a few years ago by a horse as the woman had absolutely no control of it.

You couldn't pay me enough to go out on NYD!

Agree with the others who've said Boxing Day/NYD might not be the best options for your first time! However, saying that, that's no reason why you shouldn't be able to have your first time over the Christmas period. You could go on any of the Saturdays coming up (21st, 28th and the 4th Jan) and remember your hunt will be out one, two or even three days during the week, not just at weekends - so why not go on one of those days. Which pack are you thinking of going with?

I have only hunted a few times, but daughter hunts every couple of weeks, she will not go out on Boxing Day, we always go to see the Boxing Day meet on foot & are always amazed at how some people & horses are turned out - that seem to think Boxing Day is a free for all :(

Another vote to avoid those two meets - even on experienced hunters they can be hairy - too many numpties out who don't know what they are doing, on unfit and over excited horses....

Speak to your local pack secretary as there will be other meets between these two days which should be quieter.

Have fun!
