I got back into riding last year after a break of about fifteen years, and now my other half is keen to come with me (which is great - the keener he gets, the more chance I have of owning a horse at some point!). He's been twice, and has enjoyed it, but finds it quite… trying on his nether regions! :o

I wonder if any H&Hers can recommend boy-friendly padded pants, or something similar that might save his blushes while he's learning to master a rising trot… Any help appreciated!

My hubby has been riding for years now and he always wears his cycling pants underneath his riding wear. He finds it comfy.
Also there has been evidence that horse riding men may have trouble in the further with having kids as things gets bruised. Sorry not the most pleasant remark be certainly something to think of I would say.

Thanks, Kikke - both of those things are v useful to know. Will dig out some cycling pants, and maybe keep rides to a limit...

Hell no - as a riding instructor it is only watching their pain that makes my day bearable ;-). That and men are normally very quick to learn rising trot - I think it's because they have the added incentive.
Can't answer your question seriously I'm afraid but on a practical note tell him to make sure his stirrups are the right length (always stunned at how many "helpers" send riders to my lessons that look like they could ride the National) and also get him to try rising whilst first the horse is standing still and then whilst it is walking. This should help him get the rhythm. Also make sure that he does have a leader and knows that he needs to hold either his saddle or the neckstrap to begin with. If he's trying to concentrate on his balance and steering and rising all at once then it's far too complicated.

HAH! Brilliant. He has made remarkably quick progress - maybe it's the added incentive that does it! ;)

That's a really good piece of advice, thanks Baileybones. Definitely one to try next time.
