Hi we have a collection of geldings all together and they play fight they are all around the same age and they are all coming in with some bites, cuts and abrasions in most cases not too bad but any ideas on what to treat these bites with. The skin is not broken but hair is missing and tonight he had one on his shoulder which had hair removed and felt quite warm and must be sore any suggestions.

Many members of the gelding herd at my yard play fight a lot, Dave is one of the main culprits. The dynamic is quite easy to see!

Boy donkeys are beggars for inflicting damage on each other playing rough. I have had ones with huge haematomas on their necks in the past, donkeys bleed a lot easier and for longer than horses.

Anyone looking at one of my current ones would swear that he had sweet itch as his crest is so scabby, if sweet itch is caused by a 13.1, long eared, four legged beastie, then he may have sweet itch, however it is play fighting pure and simple.

Slather in zinc and castor oil cream (nappy cream) or Sudacrem. Anything which puts a greasy coating over the broken skin to stop fly strike. My gelding used to be the ringleader of the naughty boys, and was always in the thick of any bargy games. When he had had enough he used to whip round and grab his opponent by the top lip. as if twitching him! I've never seen any other horse do this - have you?

Please be careful with sudocrem it has benzyl benzoate in it and some horses are allergic, one of mine is and it causes all his hair to fall out and he will rub the area raw.

I personally think its horrible stuff it's so claggy I much prefer the silver spray as you can still get to the injury site with water easily if need be and then just re apply.

Thanks for all your replies, they are not short of grass as only five of them in a huge field. Mine does come in at night but we always have some minor bite or cut I just think its their age all around 6 and if you watch them it does look like they are playing but they just don't seem to know when enough it enough. Lets hope they all grow out of it soon.

I like Wondergel on minor bumps. It claims to do all sorts, which I dont really believe, but it has got aloe vera and tea trea in it and has a pleasant cooling sensation when applied which feels nice, even if only temporarily, on a sore bit. Yes I have tested it on myself ?

Filtabac is great for scrapes. It's antibacterial and breathable so acts like a second skin. It's also really good as a sun block.
