We had to rush my dog Malic to the doggy hospital yesterday as he had three severe siezures in just over 24 hrs. They are doing an MRI scan tomorrow but the vet says everything else seems to have been ruled out except a tumour.

Has anyone else had any experiences with dog brain tumours, good or bad, that they may share with me. I have been tralling the internet but everything just seems so final if this is diagnosed.
We will always do whats best for Malic but i just feel so helpless at the moment so any input will be greatly received

Thanks

Thankyou for that, that site had more information than the others i had looked at. I lost my horse last year and i am not ready to loose another best friend. He hasnt shown any other symptoms of a tumour but this now seems the only option left

((HUGS)) I know how you feel, we lost our Rotti last year to a horrible Tumour which was in the whole of his tummy.
He was only 3 - he lost all the will to live towards the end, just gave up and I could see he was telling me it was time to go.
And there life then becomes in your hands

Its so hard to lose any pet, but a horse and dog I find are your best friend too.

I really do hope he gets better soon.xxxx

Is Malic a boxer - boxers often get a type of brain tumour called a meningioma which is a benign tumour. The problem is its growing in a confined space and therefore the pressure that results can cause seizures. This should show up quite clearly on the MRI scan and it may be feasible to remove it albeit by a very skilled surgeon. If its not possible to remove it there are drugs available that should reduce the severity and frequency of the seizures.
Good Luck I hope it all works out for you and your dog.

Is malic the boxer in your sig??

No advice to offer im afraid, just wanted to say that i hope he makes a swift recovery and feels a lot better soon... Poor soul. Big hugs from me and Lucy (my boxer).

Thanks, yes Malic is a boxer. The problem we have is that he also has Boxer Cardiomyopathy ( irregular heart beats ) for which is on medication for. I am just so worried about the anesthetic tomorrow with his bad heart. Its whether a combination of the two conditions make treatment impossible. I have got all bad thoughts running around in my head and cant stop crying. Its daft really because you would not think looking at him that anything was wrong with him. He runs about like an idiot when we are on walks as if nothing is wrong. Thats what is going to make any decision hard that he is still so active.

{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{hugs for you both}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}

I lost my boxer at nine to cardiomyopathy and a brother (mine) at 39 to a brain tumour (meningioma).... and I know which one i would rather not have :-(

Sorry for you both, but at least Malic wont be sad or worried... he really is the lucky one.... big big hugs to you xx

I really hope everything goes well for you tomorrow. My previous vizsla had an MRI scan done because of a suspected meningioma in her spine so I do know how you feel. Try not to worry about the anaesthetic - I know thats easy for me to say but modern anaesthetics really are very safe. Chances are they will use propofol which is very gentle on the heart. Is Malic on any meds for his cardiomyopathy? Sounds like it doesn't slow him up at all.

I know what you mean - you get so used to having them around. Where is he having the MRI done? Bracken had hers done by Geoff Skerritt in Chester. Wherever - I'm sure he's in good hands and the nurses will make a big fuss of him.

You might get it done by Geoff then - he lectures in neurology at Liverpool and is one of the top bods in the country.
Let us know how he gets on tomorrow.

Have PM'ed you, sounds like he is in a good place, but show them the Davis site - what they are doing for brain tumors they told us is revolutionary - and so far we still have a happy Bumble Dog

Fingers, paws and hooves crossed for you

my last Boxer had one. We had her put to sleep around 6 months after her first fit, as they were getting closer and closer and the after effects lasting longer and longer. We never had an MRI scan - I knew in a 12yr old Boxer having fits that a brain tumour was the most likely diagnosis so wasn't gonna put her through the stress of an anesthetic for an MRI with her extremely dodgy heart (she had cardiomyopathy as well). We just enjoyed the time we had left with her and had her PTS in our home after a fantastic walk and all her favourite treats. She was 12.5yrs old at that point - a great age for a Boxer - I know they can do some radical brain surgeries these days, but we opted not to put her through any of that and just to enjoy her time with us given all her other problems.

good luck with your boy - hope the news is good.

My heart sank when I read your post - I really hope your boy will be ok.

Unfortunately we lost our nearly 10 yr old boxer boy (Billy) last December. He suddenly started seizures and within 36 hours we had to have him pts. The most likely cause was a brain tumour although we opted not to have a scan or a post-mortem.

In his case meds weren't going to be the answer.

I REALLY REALLY hope all goes well with Malic
