Well mine and the neds progress has been a bit up & down recently. I had a silly fall at a gate on saturday (from almost a standstill) so i was fine - but he rushed through a not fully opened gate.

Since having his neck put back in some things have improved... he seems to be generally alot happier, but i dont seem to have brakes! He doesnt 'pull' but just wont stop easily!

I have tried half halts, but even then sometimes emergency stops don't help. Its great that he is more obliging (as he was getting more and more nappy), but this is rather unnerving! Ive put his dutch gag in as a loose ring snaffle was useless and for hacking obviously safer!

We have got a lesson booked on Friday (flatwork) and a Riding Club training day on SUnday. I know that schooling i obvioulsy going to be the key long term, but what can i do to help in the interim!?

He is a 16.1hh Clydie x Cob so has a very short, strong neck. I always seem to end up too far forward, especially if i panic, which i know is the worst thing, but he does pull you onto his forehand.

Some trainers have told me to ride with legs forward when hacking (jumping / hunting position), but he does need a bit of leg, especially if spooking.

BUT My flatwork instructor, advocates legs under so i can use my leg without swinging, i must admit i prefer this. She said that it will help me get out of a sticky situation easier as my legs are where they need to be squeeze!

What do i do????

it could be a couple of things really,
1. unbalanced
2. Feeling good
3. still in pain
Think youve hit the nail on the head though with more schooling its the best way to get control.
You could stay in walk on hacks and do transitions from halt to walk and pick up the pace as you feel more confident.
Make sure he is not getting fed fizzy foods as it wont help your situation.
Have you eliminated other factors like back, teeth saddle etc. for peace of mind.
Try turning him out all day before you do anything with him, so he can blow off steam before you ride.
Just a few suggestions :-)

Thanks bettlejuice!

Hes had back and saddle checked (backman who is also a vet did neck and checked back at same time).

I think it is the 'unbalanced' which is probably the answer as he is still quite green!

Lessons and schooling will be the way forward :)

teeth getting checked in a couple of weeks too.
