Brakes??

I could do with some advise please guys, my horse is getting stronger and stronger all the time and my mum thinks that he is going to be too much for me and that he needs a man rider! He's not dangerous or anything just a pain in the arse and it can lead to us cocking up because I don't have enough control. He's in a dutch gag and a grackle at the moment but thats not working very well! I used to hunt him in a snaffle but i'm not sure what has happened to those days.

Any suggestions of what I can try with him would be greatly appreciated!

Are you riding him alot or do you think it's lack of work? Do you hack out alot/vary the routine?

I agree, maybe lunge him before you ride him, spend time turning tight circles and possibly look at his feed to remove the sugar elements if he's too fizzy for you?

Perhaps an obvious question, but when did he last have his teeth done? He could be running from pain in the mouth.

have you tried a kimblewick or a pelham?

He is getting lots of work, he's good out hacking etc, it's just when he's doing exciting things like hunting, jumping and worst of all yesterday TCing he was very very strong. I think it's just because he's big and i'm small and he likes to do what he wants! i don't really mind, its just yesterday he was so bad I had to circle him which lost us lots of time and he can get strong SJing as well which isn't ideal. I could just do with a bit that he would listen to!

Ah - MB's boy is like that and she's going to try a pelham and see if that works - agree with Weezy, prob worth trying

I've hacked him out in a Pelham and he felt like he didn’t like it and was really over-bitted. I’ve also hunted him in an English gag and I could hold him in that but he knocked a little wall which is very out of character so I’m not sure if it was because he had a gag in?

If you're going to try a pelham what about using a leather curb instead of a chain? Or even a cushioned strap? Or a different mouthpiece?
