I've just been reading the bran rant post and an older one about how badly are we feeding our horses, and it has given me a thought.

Somebody somewhere mentioned bran mash with sugarbeet fed to horses after hunting and it sounds just lovely. I'm imagining cold wet winter days, tired sweaty horse having enjoyed a days hunting etc etc and I thought I would like to try it - the problem is I don't know how!!

Could somebody here explain to me how to make a bran mash please, and do I just mix it with unmollassed soaked beet?

Please no posts on whether this is bad/unbalanced or anything, I'd just like to know how to make one.

We just used to pour hot water over a scoop of bran and add some Epsom salts and a good spoonful of honey and feed when cooled enough for a pony's tongue! (and yes, mixed with soaked beet if you wish.)

A lady on our yard found a old recipie for a traditional BM.

It involved making it in the morning and covering the bucket with sacking.

She went hunting for the day and it was still warm when she came back.

Ooo! That reminds me of the way we used to poultice! Hot bran mash held over the foot with several pairs of the biggest walking socks you could find - kept the heat for ages!

Bless her, she just texted me.

"Easy peasy two scoops of bran, big handful of salt. Pour over boiling water until sloppy, cover tight with a sack and leave for 8-10 hours if poss then mix well with treacle."

My personal recipie for after hunting would be Bran, salt, comfrey herb, dried mint, oats and a packet of polos though;)

We used to make our bran mashes by putting a couple of scoops of bran in bucket add molasses to enough boiling water to make bran sloppy cover and leave for an hour or so :)

I was envisaging going in and this is what would happen:

Can I have a bag of bran please?
Do you want this bran, that bran, this bran, that bran or this super dooper bran?

I walk out :D

I'm glad you asked that BoolavogueDC because I was wondering the same! I've been looking it up online but can't find just 'bran' anywhere! Will ask at the merchants tomorrow.

Thank you everyone who has replied, I can't wait to give it a try :)

I always used to ask for broad flake bran, which as the name suggests was bigger flakes than the fine stuff used for baking. I used to make a bran mash after hunting as in the post above and leave it to soak all day, used to smell gorgeous. :)
