I have been to veiw a horse for sale. He is a warmblood that came from Hungry as a driving horse as a foalbut has never been driven.

He has brand marks on the top of his neck under his mane on the one side and in the same place on the other.

I have been told this is normal and the marks show the year and month he was born and the area in Hungry which he came from. Having never seen this before i am a bit concerned!

Can anyone shed any light on this or has anyone seen any horses with these brand markings?

thanks!

I had a Belgian Warmblood who had a brand for his breed of four horses heads in a circle. It didn't have his year and month of his birth though!

My horse is KWPN and has the brand of a lion in a shield on his thigh, quite an old lad as they have stopped branding now.
Another livery's horse on our yard has a brand on her neck where you have described, havent yet got close enough to see what it is though

Some stud books "double brand" on the neck when horses reach a certain level of approval.

But what you're describing sounds more like identification brands and some of the books, especially Eastern European ones, do have a tradition of doing this, something like the old ranch brands in the American West. We had a Polish horses called "numbers" because he looked like someone had used him as a branding teaching aid, he had so many on him.

Why are you concerned about the brands? Your best bet would be to contact the stud book he's registered with and they can likely let you know what the brands mean. Are you concerned the horse isn't who he's supposed to be?

When did they stop branding Trubie? I wondered about this as I have a 10yo KWPN now (no brand) and before that a 4yo Holstein who had no brand either and I always thought it was commonplace with WBs

Ive got a 9 year old Belgian warm blood he's not branded either seems they don't brand everything they breed.

as for working out brands and thier meanings google it I'm sure youll find some answers.

I have no idea about Hungarian branding, but it does sound like one brand is his studbook identification and one his date of birth? I am not sure why you are concerned about it though???

Some warmbloods are double branded - once on the thigh as foals to identify the studbook and year of birth, and once on the neck if they achieve an approved status.

KWPN stopped branding in the late 90s in favour of microchipping, but will brand Ster, Pref or Keur horses if the owner allows.

I used to look after a driving horse which was Hungarian. It had a brand half-way up it's neck and in the left thigh.

The thigh brand represents the stud book, the neck is for the stud's own identification purpose.
