In case you've missed my previous posts about this:
This is open to anyone who thinks they might fall off a horse in future, and wants to limit their chances of injuring themselves.
NeilM is our resident Martial Arts guru (years of teaching it, plus years of riding. this is a guy who knows how to fall, and is willing to give us his time and expertise for free.)
Nominal charge just to cover the cost of his fuel to get here and back. This is not for profit.
There will be space for an Equine Car Boot Sale, Swap Shop, whatever. No charge for spaces, but donations appreciated, these will go to an Injured Riders' Charity of Neil's choice.
Llanali is in charge of organising those who are bringing food to share for lunch, so that we don't end up with 10 identical packets of crisps. Please pm her if you are coming and want to bring food and share etc.
Two training sessions, one a.m., one p.m.
Times to be decided depending on approx numbers of attendees. We'll try to make the a.m. session at a sensible time, so those with horses to do first should be able to. Ditto the last session.
I am at PE12, just off A17 near Long Sutton, about 35 mins from Peterborough by car, if that helps.
Please either let me know on this thread, or by pm, if you want to come along.
Thanks.

My riding club recently did this but i was unable to go.

Its a great idea and i think it should be compulsory for anyone who rides.
Even if they done "plan" to fall off!

I had a nasty fall a few years ago, this may have help make my injuries less severe.

I and definitely going to one soon, unfortunately you are too far away!

This is such a good idea!

Something I would love to attend if I wasn't already in the latter stages of brokeness due to not knowing about breakfalls!

If only I'd healed enough to drive.

Hope the event goes well. Please post an update when it has happened and let us all know how it went and what was learned.

What a brilliant idea - having narrowly avoided being bronced over the arena fence this morning I would be very keen! However I live too far away for it to come to yours. Do you know if anyone else organises this sort of thing elsewhere in the country?
I am in East Sussex.

We're going :D

Taking a car full (riders and photographers :D). I'm driving and being chief somethingorother, due to thinking it would be a good idea to land on my feet from about eight feet in the air whilst failing miserably to stay on ned over a jump.

I think I'd like to come. I live off the A17 about half an hour away from you. This sounds silly, but will we practicing falls ourselves and or watching? Presume we bring hats.

Let me know the session times when you know - thank you. :)

jendie, if you give us a very rough idea of where you live, someone coming may be able to pick you up en route.
legaldancer, we'll be practising tucking and rolling, i'm not the expert but I think it'll be from crouching, then from standing, and finally (if we're getting good enough and confident enough) from small heights - e.g. off a block, off my mounting block etc, that sort of thing. you'll be glad to hear I don't have any patent safety horses here to chuck ourselves off... ;) ;)
yes, i think hats would be a good idea, body protectors too maybe, i'll wait and see what Neil thinks of that idea.
waterproof outer layer (or, at least, a sacrificial outer layer) will be essential as we'll be practising this in my school, on sand and rubber surface, and the carbonblack comes off the rubber.
removing outer layer before going in the house for lunch will be kind of essential... ;)
spectators and/or those too broken to do it at the moment, are of course welcome.
the plan at the moment is for everyone to do 2 sessions, a morning and an evening one, with a break for a light lunch in between. if that doesn't suit people though, maybe a longer single session would be better, that's up to you lot and Neil.
if there are loads of takers, we'll do two separate groups.
it'll be video'd and photographed, and i think the plan is to have the vids linked to off here as soon as they're sorted, so if you're too far away, if we get the vids right, you can learn from them and practise the exercises at home.

I really should go - what would it be, about an hours drive from Mansfield?

I'm going - I'm South Notts (think further south than Clifton - I'm about as far south as is still Notts...) Multimap said 1hr 45 for me, mainly due to the fact its across country - no motorway really.

What a brill idea! Sadly I am also too broken to drive to attend or I would love to come.

Can we have video's on the technique for those of us who can't attend? If all goes well can you do a rerun next year so I can attend?

Fab idea!

Would love to come, and might bring a couple of friends too if that's ok. I hadn't fallen off in years, but then managed it twice this year and boy did one hurt :(

Would prefer the afternoon unless the morning one is quite late, although would definitely arrive in time for lunch and am good(ish) at cake baking if that's any use for afternoon tea?!

I'd love to meet a few faces on here too :)

Blu; the club have said that they will hold follow up sessions, which I have happily agreed to teach.

Everyone else: If we get a good response to Kerrilli's session, then I will be happy to return and run another. Those farther afield, let me see how this session goes. If it's a success, then I'll become a long distance travelling tumbler and we'll bring the roadshow to a venue of your choosing.

As for what to wear. I took an old hat with me to the first session, but no one else had one and I did not want to be the only one :o

An old hat is a good idea as is an OLD body protector, although you should not need either.

We will definitely start off at very low level...practically sitting on the floor and each person gets to progress at their own rate. Some will end up doing any manner of somersaults, others will just gently roll about the place.

Remember your first ever riding lesson? Well, this is the same thing....only different.

Looking forward to meeting you all.

Stripping off a lunchtime eh? No comment :p

how have i missed all of these except the very first thread
I will talk to the lady who offered to give me a lift & check the calendar - if it isnt to late ?

Yep, still lots of time, don't panic! I'll do a few more posts next week as it gets closer, to remind people and try to get a slightly better idea of numbers so that we know whether we need to split into two groups or not, to decide on times to suit everyone the best, etc.

The training will be very much led by the attendees: Those who need to keep it simple and close to the ground will be allowed to build up confidence at their own pace. Those of a more adventurous nature will be challenged in different ways

It is all about learning and having fun, as I believe the two go hand in hand.
