A new horse has recently moved to our yard and he is a lovely chap. The only problem is he is a brute with fencing.

The fencing is a nice solid post and rail around all the paddocks but this just doesn't seem to phase him at all. He has literally crashed through the fences  This morning I found him in the same paddock as my boy which was not where he was left last night.

Has anyone else had any experience of horses breaking through fencing and what did you do to remedy the situation. Any help would be very much appreciated :)

Mains hot wire ;) over gates as well.

Raise the fences - how high are yours? A horse can't barge through a fence that he can't get his head over, especially if it is wired, jump it maybe, but they generally won't run their heads into an object , unless they are mentally deficient.

My fences are all 5' tall, the horses can get their heads over but then they get zapped on the throat and they don't like that very much.

I think the fences are about 4ft - 4.5ft so they're not small fences although they don't have any electric tape on them. Worth a try though, anything has to be better than fixing broken rails every other day.

If you are wiring them get the extended insulators, they can be attached so that they stand upright giving you another 4 or 5" in height - then get his muzzle wet and let the devil zap himself. Better a hefty zap than staking himself, which he will do in the end.

Good Luck, houdini horses are a PITA

I have one very dominant gelding that simply cannot be with anything else I have here (we've tried - big mistake :() his paddock is like a maximum security exercise yard, wire on the inside, wire on top of the gate and fence. At least he thinks it is, most of the time the wire isn't even on, but he's not willing to run the gauntlet and find out, and we aren't going to tell him.

My ID is exactly the same! I had to tie some elec posts (the taller ones) onto the wooden posts and then got the wide tape and put around. I then connected onto a mains unit (with the portable ones he'd bite through the tape and chew it up!). When I first connected it to the mains, I enticed him up to the tape with a carrot and positioned it so as he went to get the carrot, he got a mouthful of high voltage tape! Never done it again, touch wood!

It really is a PITA!

I think that's going to be the only sensible option. My OH did suggest building a very sturdy brick wall around the paddock though. He's ok until he's left on his own in the paddock (other horses are in the paddocks next to him though so he's not conpletly on his own) although he was in with another horse last night and still decided to take a trip next door.
