My Highland pony will be 3 on the 14th of May. When would it be a good time to start breaking him in and does anyone have any tips on how to start him off (he is a very lazy boy).

You could do some groundwork if you are experienced with backing/bringing on youngsters. Other than that I'd seek professional help. It can be very easy to make mistakes and you want it to to be a positive process.

Send him to a professional.

Or...get a pro to you.
They should be able to help you from ground work onward. Don't rush the whole process; even if you think your pony is doing well, don't be tempted to push too quickly. Make sessions 'little and often', babies get bored and tired easily.

Also meant to say that if you back him this spring you could ride gently for summer and autumn, then turn away/ease off for the winter to let him mature a bit more :). Perfect timing!
