Hey, I want you to be honest but.....

I am thinking of getting a yearling (gelding) and breaking him in. I wont be doing it alone, i will have my cousins help and she has broken in all her horses and they have all come out very good (she is doing one at the moment and i am helping and learning) Have you got any tips? should i do it? (i am feeling confident and i love a challenge)

Thanks!

A yearling is too young to start, but if you are thinking of buying him now and keeping him, then starting him when he is old enough, as long as the person helping you has sufficient experience, then this could be an option. But you really are better from a cost and experience point of view acquiring an already backed horse.

have you thought about maybe buying a 3-4 yr old that has not been broken yet? or backed then turned away? that way you still get a challenge but you dont have to keep him for 2-3 years before you can start to educate him with backing ect. i think it is nice you want to do it yourself (with help) and think that if you feel you can do it then do it! :) but maybe just buy something a little older than a yearling xxx hope it all goes well for you whatever you decide to do xx
