Can anyone recommend anyone in the leics / northants area who breaks to harness? ideally to take in on livery and then show me the ropes too. Preferably late summer / autumn time?

Thankyou. karen Basset isnt too far away from me.

anyone any idea how long it may take to break to harness? or is that like asking how long is a piece of string?

Really depends on the horse. My boy took me about 4 weeks but that wasn't continue work and I'm no expert. I know one that was done in 2 weeks.
Yours is a shetland is that right? I wouldn't think it would be that long.

Yeah, I'd agree with IC, a friend of mine solely does this and it generally takes him about 2 weeks to break properly.

With Molly (the black mare in my sig), we long-reined her for a bit, then attached a tyre to the harness behind her. That was too easy, so i sat in the tyre and she dragged me around! Did that a couple of times. Then bought the trap. Put the trap behind her one day and moved it around her, but didnt actually attach her to it. The next day, we put her to it and that was it - she's done! Not bothered in the slightest! Think she seems to really enjoy it. She's a pretty laid-back mare though, so not all horses will be broken to drive so quickly.
Have fun!

yes, he's a shatlnd, who has the basic idea of lungeing and long reining. I long rein him with a competent 10 yr old riding him, and walk behind making noises, and he's fine with that. I havent attempted long reining minus the rider yet lol.

TBH I want him broken to give him more interest in his life. ATM he's just a kiddies plod, which I think is boring for him (he's the kind who loves something new to do).

I used to drive a shetland. It was the most fun pony I have ever driven, so nippy and just general fun. I sure they really enjoy it too.

Karen is too busy at the moment to take any equines in but I have contact details of someone who may be able to help if your interested, She is situated in Newark.

Driving really is great fun and shetties certainly seem to love it. I believe the average time for a professional is 4 weeks.
Remember to get some lessons yourself before driving your newly broken pony as a green driver with a green pony can so easily lead to disaster.
