Well i need a breast girth for my jumping saddle (rather than a breast plate) as the whole of the saddle including the girth moves a bit

I am planning on getting a totally leather one (padded though) but people have said that they restrict movement - is this true?? and if so would i need an elastic one? because ive been told an elastic breast girth defeats the point of having a breast girth on at all - it this correct?? i dont know what to believe so can anyone clarify this with me??

I see your point.
My theory is ..a saddle should be of a good fit anyway. The breast girth or plate is just an additional back-up and not to be used as something that 'keeps your saddle in place in a normal tack-up' (if you get me).
So if there is an 'exertion' ie over a jump the saddle may well 'shove' back a tad and the breast girth then comes into play by not allowing it to go any further.
So IMO the elasticated one is what I would go for and fitted snug and properly.
Hope MO helps.x

Letter in eventing magazine this month saying they felt breast girths/plates should be made compulsory having witnessed a fatal accident caused by saddle getting jumped back.

We have a mare who becomes flat sided when eventing fit. Her saddle slips back XC starting at the girth. We have accepted that her natural girth groove is a bit further back than most horses. however she goes XC in a breast plate and a breast girth, just in case.

Both are fitted fairly loosely to prevent the saddle slipping back too far, rather than hold it forward. I wish I could afford one of the Kolibri ones though. Are there any cheap copies of it around yet?

Looking at the "ultimate breastplate" in comparison to the Kolibri I think i'd prefer to shell out another £20 AND GET THE Kolibri!

i saw the letter in eventing magazine and totally agree

I always have both of mine in a breast plate but i need a breast girth instead for the ginger baggage

hmm yes i was looking at both the kolibri and olney one- the only thing that puts me off the kolibri is that it looks as if you are just following fashion if you use one rather than just because it is extremely good at its job

Fab!! Hard work then for you! Very envious though!

Not sure yet, depends on transport and weather!! Would Ideally like to go to Oasby, but is right at the beginning of the season, so can be a bit wet! Otherwise Stafford, or possibly Eland Lodge, but would rather that was a second one!

How bout you?

Ive used a leather breastplate and an elastic breatgirth. For XC I tend to use both on my TB x as his saddle does slip back (he has very active shoulders!). TBH I bought the elastic breatgirth rather than the leather girthy one because I thought it would be less restrictive. I wouldnt say an elastic one is pointless because its not like my saddle slips back and I find the elastic stretched right out tight when Im finished (ie. it remains the same which would suggest it kept pulling the saddle into place)?
