Hi, posted this in CR too...

I'm doing my dissertation on 'effects and possible restrictions of choice of breastplate/ breastgirth on forelimb kinematics of the jumping horse'.

However, it's proving quite tricky to get definitive names for the different types so I was just wondering if you lovely bunch might be able to tell me what you think?! I was planning on testing 3 or 4 different types including the hunting breastplate and 5-point (fairly straightforward- I just need to decide whether I test the hunting breastplate with or without elastic inserts), its the other 2 options that I seem to be getting into difficultly with!

Would you call this (below) a breastgirth when attached to the D-rings?

And what about this attached to girth straps? Breastcollar?

Thanks for your help and if anyone has any other comments or advice on my project then kick on!! :)

Now I may be wrong, but I have always thought that the 2nd pic was what is classed as a hunting breastplate? I think the top is a racing breastplate isnt it?? Sorry - Im confusing the matter further!! x

am i going senile.... doesn't look like its wearing a breastplate at all to me??!:confused:

All too confusing:eek:

I would call the top one a racing breastgirth
The 2nd a breastplate

You then have the 5 point and hunting which gives you 4 different names but you may need to use photos if putting in any work you do as it looks as if people use different terms and this could cause confusion if not totally clear to whoever will be viewing your work or when doing any research.

Its me thats senile!!! i couldnt find the right pic! So sorry!!!!
I thought that what Faracat and you OP call a Hunting BP is a standard BP, and that the one in your 2nd pic is the one I call a hunting BP..... Oh dear - more pills I think!!!!! lol! xx

It is confusing!

I would call both of the BP's in the OP 'breastgirths' it's just that the second one has the extra over-wither strap.

Maybe we need to clarify the most common names for each type of BP first. :D ;)

The top one is definitley NOT a racing breast plate. We use one's similar to the one in the second picture.

I would call the top one a Breastplate and the second a Breastgirth!

More confusion!

i think the problem comes really from both terms just being used interchangeably! could it be that a breast girth is any type which attaches to the girth and breast plate attaches to the D's?

I'd say they're both breastgirths - one just has the added neck strap.
I use this on my lad - used to use it without then bought the neck strap attachment later on.

Maybe I'm just confusing myself because they appear to have a totally different action because they're attached in different places so i think they should have different names! Deary me....:)
