Those who use a breastplate, what do you actually use it for, is it to stop saddle moving or more for security?

Does it effect horses way of going?

What type is best for hacking, general riding?

I have a high withered horse whos saddle can slip back occasionally but it is not a major problem. I am thinking of getting a breastplate to help keep his saddle more secure and also so I can use it as a handle when im scared lol!
I cant seem to find a plain neckstrap anywhere and dont want to use a martingale as he dosent need one.

Is this a stupid idea?

Thanks mrsmozart.

It was checked last month. He is a strange horse and has high withers and a really bouncy movement which seems to move any saddle slightly (not much but still!) He has lost lots of muscle latley due to lack of work also.

Ah. I see

.

What about one of the sticky saddle pad thingies (very technical me!).

I think mine would certainly help hold a saddle in place. I like it because it has so many adjust points that it can be tweaked as the horses changes shape (mine's a Jeffries).

if you want a breastplate just for holding saddle and for grabbing onto i have one for sale - in black, full size has removable martingale bit - pm me if interested

I had the same problem with my high wither WB and a 3 point BP (like most people use) was utterly useless plus I was told at a later date I had risk damaging the tree due to how the front D's were pinned to the tree :s

I ended up putting a breat girth on (like the polo ponies wear!) which keep the saddle from slipping to an extent. This was all back in the day before 5 point BP which are clearer far cooler though not as useful as a breast girth.

Hiya,
use mine as a handle due to horse being hogged. also for a little bit of stability. not sure if it helps but more mounting o n hacks.

Sounds like a plain hunter breastplate would be perfect. A well fitted one will give you a perfectly placed handle.

I use one to keep his girth forwards (he has a flybite scar lump just behind his girth) but it also helps with saddle stability and with mounting.

I use a 5-point breastplate for competing in as a holdy-in place thing and a handle on rare occasions

just find it keeps my saddle slightly steadier when going xc. However at home I use a hunter-styled one, purely for the use of a martingale as I dont like 'pure' martingales.
By the sounds of it a hunter-styled one would suit best for you, substitute for a neck strap is a stirrup leather!

works a treat if you have a spare one lying around.
