Hi,

i have a 5yo who was only broken at the beginning of the summer. He's a big boy and obviously a long way from being fit but after a short stretch of even slightly faster work his breathing is super quick and shallow and seems to take a really long time to get back to normal. Does anyone know how many breaths per minute is normal at rest/ after work? i think i may just be being paranoid with this one but can't hurt to ask!

Between 8-16 I think.

My pony recently had a breathing problem and his breathing was 36 a minute and did not return to normal after 30 minutes of rest so I called the vet who confirmed that this was high and he had had an allergic reaction to something and was wheezing as well.

After speaking to vet if breathing not returning to normal after 30 mins of rest something is not right.

It took about a month of medication to come right again but at the worst point he breathing was not even normal at rest.

Hi spinner - I'm a million miles from being an expert on this but my 12 yr old rescue mare who had just popped babies all her life was backed last August/Sept and she too runs out of puff easily and her breathing was still fast 20 mins after a half hour hack round the block! But she had a stage II vetting at that point and the vet wasn't overly worried about it. Angel had severe liver damage from ragwort poisoning when she came to me so I was concerned that her liver was struggling to be able to release the energy that her body needed for exercise. But Prof Knottenbelt (he's a saint and has given me loads of clear, common sense advice on getting Angel well again) said it was just a "fitness and fatness" thing, and the local vets were also happy that it was just a fittening thing - you can't get a newly backed ned fit in 5 mins. It might be worth you working out a careful fittening programme for your boy that sticks to walking, walking, walking for at least 6 weeks, probably more. There will be tons of professional peeps on the Forum who can help with this. Good luck with your lad x
