Hi,
So getting everything ready (slowly) for winter and when my horse comes in for the winter I give him a breathing supplement just to stop any nasty coughs or flared nostrils.
I bought a really good one from surrey equestrian last year (although I think they have closed?!) and can't remember the name.
I prefer the liquids to the granules as I also feed him garlic in the winter also to keep his airways clear.

Can anyone recommend a good breathing supplement, the best quality for the least amount of money.
I can't remember the one I got last year which was about 20 quid and was very good.

Also- Is mixing supplements ok ? Whilst making up his feed earlier I only just realised what a disgusting mixture I seemed to be making (although It obviously didn't bother ned as he scoffs the lot).
In the winter he has garlic, breathing supplement, linseed for his coat and also sometimes general vitamin supplements and also biotin for his feet when I feel he needs it.
I never thought about it really but is it ok to feed several supplements?

Oops - Sorry Have just found the mystery supplement. - Airway plus!
Thanks :)

I wouldn't use more than one breathing supplement as I feel it's a waste off money, find a good one and stick to it else you don't know what's really helping. Airways by equine America is very good as is global herbs products. Also do as much to help as you can, turn out, soak hay even if it don't look dusty as there will be dust that you can't see and choose bedding carefully. My mare gets really bad, the only bedding suitable to her is paper and soaked hay with her airways and no coughing in sight.

Glad you found what you wanted. I have no idea about mixing supplements, although my personal gut reaction is to feed as few as possible, only for things that really warrant it as I feel a lot is fed unnecessarily. Not saying that you do so of course!

Have heard that in humans taking a garlic additive / supplement can stop other mediactions working, and am wondering if this is true in horses too? Plus garlic is a great allround supplement for goodness, so I believe will help a myriad of things.

Looking at what you have listed, I would probably give garlic to support the respiratory system, not give a specific airway supplement unless he has a specific problem to address, and something to improve both hoof and hide at the same time, but don't know which one as I've never had to use it. The way you have worded it, it sounds as though he is generally fine and you are giving the supplements in case of problems as opposed to when problems occur. This is when I would use something broad range to support the overall health not such specific things.

:)

I feed Aloe Vera juice 150mls a day (£4.99 from Holland and Barrett) and Ventilate £35.99. Ventilate was recommended by vet at Rossdales. I have tried Gobal Herbs, Garlic nothing worked. The above combination does seem to. Also feed haylage not hay.

I have found Equistro Secreta Pro very good for airways.
As to feeding several supplements at any given time, IMO the best way is to stick with one company/brand to make sure that all the products you are using complement each other.

Another vote for the Equine America one- its the only breathing supplement i have ever noticed to be beneficial and it smells amazing!
